I recently set up a small (10 concurrent player) vanilla minecraft survival server if anyone wants to dork around in it.

Spawn is in an easily survivable area. Plenty of water, trees, etc:
I have a base over the hill with provisions in it if you need them or want to poke around:
from an outpost looking back toward my base in the distance (toward the upper left); spawnpoint beyond that in the same direction:
I built a mob/xp grinder that stacks the loot in a chest:
Of course, you don't have to take advantage of any of that. You can traipse off and make your own way.
I'm connecting it to it with the $5 3G verizon hack and it works most the time. So you should have no problems on a "real" connection.
