After binge watching YT videos of expats travelling/living in Mexico, I'm ready to take my first solo trip driving south of the border. The last time I was in Cabo, I found out a few weeks after I got back home that several severed body parts were discovered a couple miles away from the fancy resort I stayed at.  Everyone I know clucks their tongue, furrows their brow and basically plans my funeral in their minds. I'm pushing 60, dang it, and haven't lived dangerously since my 2006 honeymoon in Jamaica riding through the mountains in a rickety taxi getting high from secondary ganja smoke. Anyhoo, this ol' gal's gonna bring in the new year with a bang driving from the frigid Midwest to the balmy beaches of Baja. I'd rather die there than in 6 feet of snow.  ;)

Go for it!  I mean the worst that can happen is free medical care (amputations).

Just kidding!

I would say stay on the main roads though.

I think when I finally get on the road several years from now, I'm going to take a trip to Puerto Penasco (aka Rocky Point) as a baby steps trip into Mexico. It is 2 hrs from Phoenix and Tuscan and has several RV parks on the Sea of Cortez. If all goes well, maybe I'd try a separate trip down Baja California.

If I were to do a trip down Baja today, my main concerns are: MX insurance cost (I did a quote and it was ~$600 to cover my truck and travel trailer for 6 months), availability of ultra low sulfur diesel (my truck is a newer diesel and getting fuel further from the border might be an issue), and safety (I think Baja is mostly safe as long as you don't do something stupid).

From a guy who has made 7 trips by van from Sacramento, CA to Costa Rica, I would advise against going solo. Now is not a good peroid in Mexican culture. Cartels are active and it's too easy to become "collateral damage", not to mention the Federales who want their "mordida" or the plain ole street criminals.

Ten years ago things were much different.

I had no problems at all in Matamoros and had a great time.

a buddy was in Cabo a couple months ago and he didn't have any issues...but if you look
you will find some definite horror stories. i think there still may be a travel advisory as well?
good luck! jim

Mod Edit, the above link is about a murdered American businessman in Cabo San Lucas. it has pop ups and auto play videos. please include a complete description with your links.

When I went years ago there were a lot of uniforms around with real assault rifles. I didn't feel threatened or unsafe at anytime. I can't speak to the interior of Mexico as we flew in but I think the government there wants to keep a tourist attraction as safe as they can.

Hope this is not too political.
