I just became aware of this.
It started out as a go fund me project. They wanted to raise $250,000 and they ended up raising over $700,000.
It's an Android Tablet. Version 4.4. You can run any Android apps, including Kindle and Nook. It has a black and white Ereader screen. No color. No camera.
It's full IPX68 spec waterproof, dustproof, mudproof, etc. The case has a built in solar panel that can fully recharge it with 5 hours exposure to bright sun.
It has both American GPS and Russian Glonass chips built in, and comes preloaded with 100k topo maps covering the US, Canada, and Mexico. 24K topo maps on an sd card are available as an extra cost option.
It has thermometer, barometer, and hygrometer built in, so it can be used to forecast the weather.
It has AM, FM, Shortwave, Longwave, and NOAA radio reception built in.
It has a GMRS transceiver built in for communications.
They've apparently had to postpone it's introduction a couple of times, but they are now saying it will be out before the end of the year. You can pre-order it now for only $299.
