Backstory:

I'm traveling this was as I have no other relatively comfortable choice, and plan to completely outsource bathing to truck stops & eat out of the compressor-based fridge I have as I can't afford to eat out every meal. I'll be using moms fuel cards for the fuel which I'll be paying back once I'm

The purpose of this trip is to see the Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey circus which is coming to an end; their very last planned show is May 21st, 2017. It's now or never to make the trip.

Not seeing RBBB will bring me years or resentment & bad feeling much like not being with my grandfather one last time before he died. I will take this trip even if I have to borrow at 120 percent interest, it's that important to me.

So I am planning on taking a trip to the eastern seaboard using a 2015 Ford Focus SE sedan, and I need to know how to make the back flat for sleeping front-back using the trunk space and rear seat space. I researched for a way and these rear seats look to be bolted down, these don't look like the kind that folds forward and allows the seat backs to fold flat.

This is for a 2-week road trip, I don't mind removing the back seat-back (the larger of the two) or the seat cushion if the seat folds flat with it removed.

Before I lived in a giant van I lived in a Suzuki SX4 hatchback. Not enough room to get horizontal anywhere. I built a platform from the front dash to the back hatch, over the seats, to sleep on. It was only ~22" wide but I could get horizontal. Did that for three months. I'm sure you could do something similar.

what happened to the van? and where did this car come from? for a 2 week trip I would just leave it as is. sleep on the seats as is and get a tent for when you can use it. highdesertranger

His new van is also no longer in running condition.

I'm in the same mode of thinking as HDR and leave it as is. I did a 6 week cross country trip in my 2 door Wrangler and used a tent more often than not. But did spend several nights with just the seat reclined back. One night at a rest stop a guy in a pick up was heading cross country too, and he just unrolled a sleeping pad and slept under his truck. Thought that was a pretty good idea, however a car would be too low for that method.

Bummer about your van, don't drive your Mom's car like you drive your own vehicles!

Please keep the discussion to back seats modifications in Ford Focus sedans for this thread. We can discuss my life situation here: https://vanlivingforum.com/Thread-2001-Ford-e350-extended-high-top-van?pid=261185#pid261185

Why sleep like you're in a coach seat (albeit halfway to horizontal) when one can lie flat (or nearly flat) with a 20 minute modification? Since I plan to be by myself and won't be loading the car to max capacity I figure why not sleep relatively comfortable using the trunk & rear seat area?

I was able to remove the seat cushion but realized I could get extra cushion and about the same flatness if I removed the seat back instead behind the drivers seat (the wide seat back).

For climate control I'm idling the car in extremes as it's a short term solution, and layer blankets for cold nights. For food I'll bring a single burner propane stove, compressor based 12v chest fridge with cookware for basic cooking.

Why people rough it when they don't have to...
