Hello all - I'm new here,

I have been trying to prepare as much as possible within the last 3 months and decided to move to Arizona from Colorado. I have less than 2 weeks before I move.

I have a Core instant tent but wondering now if it would withstand Arizona winds. I know that a van is recommended, but I only have a car at this time. I would have to save for a van. Would I be allowed to sleep in my car on BLM land or do I have to have a tent out and sleep in it?

Thank you for any advice.

Hi there, Alana!!
I'm new here, too, but I've been reading and watching videos for ages.
I'm pretty positive you can sleep in your car. I've seen tons of CheapRVLiving videos of people living or camping in their cars.

Good luck and stay safe. I hope you have a ball!

Exciting stuff... definitely an emotional rollercoaster. I take alot of solace in watching the cheaprvliving youtube vids. Moving to a new town can be pretty scary let alone moving into a nomadic lifestyle.

I am completely new to all of it as well and know nothing about BLM land regs. Plenty of folks here know all those details and I am sure they will be right there to offer guidance.

Have fun!

Suanne lives in her car on BLM land and has videos on Bob's channel. She's the only one that I know of by name, but there are plenty of folks doing so - you'll be fine! You might want a tent just to have a place to stand up in less than stellar weather. As to the winds, I'm not sure. Several people on here from AZ who might could lend an answer to that question for you.

Congrats on making the change, and best wishes on your new journey!

Welcome Alana to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

Hello Alana and welcome....

Even if you plan to do all of your sleeping in your car (many do) it's a good idea to have at least a small tent, even a cheap kids tent, or maybe a small screen room, to use as a 'place holder' when you go into town for supplies, and also you can use it for 'storage' of things like a small porta-pottie, extra clothes, water jug, an ice chest, a couple of folding chairs, stuff like that...this will help you to have more room inside your car and that can be important if you are spending time inside of it when the weather is cold, or rainy, or windy, or all three!

Thank you so much! I definitely feel more relieved now. I will check out the Tips, Tricks and Rules as well and watch more videos from Bob.

Thanks again!

Some years the wind is bad, some years it isn't. Last winter seemed a lot calmer. But at least it tends to come from the same direction all day, so it's easier to position a car as a wind break.

Set your tent up next to your car (hopefully downwind), and put your supplies in the tent, and sleep in the car. This is similar to what we used to do when we were boating, we would set up a tent, and an awning with all of our gear to hold the site while we were out on the lake. At night we pulled our nicely padded back-back seats down, and slept in the boat.

Fair warning, Alana -- those videos are ADDICTIVE!!!!  LOL
I'm so glad you got the answer you needed to feel more comfortable.
Peace of mind, even on the small things, is so important to most aspects of our lives.

Don't forget to have FUN!

Did you look at reviews on the tent you purchased to see if it was good in high winds? Some are, some are not.
