They will have to stop saying that there is no stupid questions after this!
I wonder if there is land for sale that has an old mine on it? I am thinking more along the lines of storage than mining for gold?

sure lots of them. not just gold but a wide variety of minerals. it's called a patented mining claim. the thing is most of the time the price is inflated by unscrupulous sellers. another thing abandoned mines a home to many critters, snakes, rats, and cats find them highly attractive. highdesertranger

The Happy Jack mine on HWY95 (between Hite and Farley Canyon) in Utah was bought to store climbing ropes I believe the owner also likes to shoot long distant targets, just so you know yes but as HDR says most come at an inflated price. In Kentucky sometimes you buy property that you didn't know had a mine till it caves in or you fall in, lots of old unregistered mines as well as caves there as water dissolves limestone.

I think the bigger question is, do/would you have the mineral rights to it if they didn't know it was there? Cool idea on your thinking though.

if you get the mineral rights would be determined by,

does the seller have the mineral rights?
does the seller include the mineral rights with the sale?

most of the time if it's a mine yes they do include the mineral rights. but you must be careful because sometimes the seller will retain a portion of the rights. 10% is not unheard of.
