ISP Throttled to 3G. So what can a VPN do for me?

I bought the Unlimited plan from VZ, worked great for a few days and now, ...surprise... not so much.

Average of 3 Speedtest's before and after upgrade and then after 10G of use and Verizon throttling.
(I understood that this would not happen until 22G of use. Guess my VZ store Mgr was misinformed.)
Oh and FYI this is data from my S&B residence, not roaming.

Before upgrade 6/12/2017 5510L MiFi JetPack 4G LTE results; (acceptable for two years and paying for 18G plan)
PING 54ms
DOWNLOAD 6.53 Mbps
UPLOAD 6.77 Mbps

After upgrade 6/22/2017 6620L MiFi JetPack 4G LTE Unlimited, results; (faster/ quicker)
PING 42ms
DOWNLOAD 27.77 Mbps
UPLOAD 12.34 Mbps

After 10G of data use on my new Unlimited Plan and now Throttled 3G speed on 6620L JetPack 7/2/1017
(Really, really slow, stupid slow)
PING 39ms
DOWNLOAD 0.48 Mbps (480 kbps)
UPLOAD 0.58 Mbps (580 kbps)

Sure, faster than dial-up but this is 2017, right?

Anyhoo, I'm reading that using a VPN may help with this. Any thought's? Experience with VPN and throttling?

I don't think VPN will help a bit. For you to have service, Verizon has to recognize your device. Your device is metered. I too have Verizon through a mifi, and have been round and round with them about my limited unlimited plan through any sort of hotspot. They said I get ten gig through each registered device used as a hotspot, but do get unlimited through my phone. I guess the only answer to this is to get a really large phone/pad.
I just don't want to carry a pad around using it as a phone. I'm sure they know this. :dodgy:

Clip from below link....
"Using a VPN service connects your computer (including mobile devices) to a VPN provider’s servers using an encrypted tunnel. Because all data passing through this tunnel is protected by strong encryption, your ISP cannot know what users are doing on the internet, and therefore cannot prioritize or discriminate against specific services."

With my limited search I'm beginning to understand this and as long as you can stay connected your good to go. But I'm still looking/reading.

You are still connecting to the WiFi then a VPN. So the ISP still see's the connection.

VPN will not help with speed. It may actually slow things down slightly because the encryption adds a bit of overhead and you are tunneling everything through a different server.

There are benefits to using the VPN for sure, but speed is not one of them.

hmmm My 3G only device sees up to 3.1 Mbps. They are hitting you with pitiful speeds.

I guess all I can say is... well crap. I now understand I'm stuffed full of wish full thinking.

Ballenxj, I do have three devices, Hotspot, Cell and Tablet. Just ran a speedtest on the phone and Tablet
and then checked with my VZ account. I do have 4G still running on both of those with about 3GB total consumed
to date. So I should be able to tether the Cell then use the Tablet until I consume 22GB total.

Reducto, I was wondering about losing speed with encryption. When I think about that, it's pretty obvious now.

Jim, I asked the question about what Verizon considered 3G in the VZ help chat room. The VZ monitor said 600Kbs. And that is the #1 question and complaint they get.
