I've found a very nice awning for vans that is reasonably cheap ($250). It's an ARB and goes up and down nicely.

I also found that mesh tarps (also called shade cloth) is a great help because it allows the wind to go through but still gives a lot of shade.

I had a friend that procured an EZ-Up type RV garage, which he covered the top & south sides with shade cloth. Kept his RV in the shade all day long, and he said it made a 30° difference in inside temps...

I used to cover my old van with army camo shade material and wing it out each side. I used portable solar then. It made a good prospector camp and kept my area a lot cooler. 20-30 degrees can make a huge difference in your comfort level.
Things seemed easier then...less technical, fewer things, simpler things.

Funny, I never thought of it as vandwelling back then, never thought of it as being houseless/homeless....its just what I did and how I lived.
