I got tired of begging people to help me and just paid to have it done.

I really couldn't afford it. My engine is acting up again and going into the shop. I was low on money so I got a loan from the bank to do the repairs and I got some extra money to help with a few more parts and the RTR trip. I have my motorcycle ( i can't ride anymore) up for sale and I'll pay the loan off in the Spring when someone buys it.
I dipped into that money to get this done.

If I had just gone ahead and had this done 3 months ago instead of counting on other peoples promises to help me out, My interior would have been nearly done by now. Live & Learn

I know that one.  It is so hard to get the SIL away from the computer games, I ended up doing mine one piece at a time.  I am lucky I have enough experience to know how to do it by myself.

I don't even ask any more.  There will be major changes in the new year.   :dodgy:

And here I was thinking a commercial for a certain little blue pill. ;)

Looks great, looks like you left some room at the rear to use as a garage? I've always liked that design. In the long run, after the loan is done and paid for and you're enjoying the van I don't think paying someone to do it will bother you at all. Sometimes it's really nice to just get it done. Think of it as a very nice Christmas present to yourself!

This is the reason I hesitated to even open the thread, but I saw there were lots of other replies, so...........
Congratulations on getting it done. ;)

ERLH - After reading many threads here, having a comfortable bed seemed to be a main goal. Having the bed sideways would have given me more open floor space towards the front, but being almost 6' tall, running the bed longways down the drivers side won out. Having a hi top gives more storage off the floor.
Putting up a bulkhead has provided a space in back for my battery box containing 4 - Trojan T105 RE's. Placing the batteries in back puts weight behind the rear axle and allows for venting batteries outside the sleeping area. I'll vent the battery box outside of the van.
I hope to store my genny, ladder, hoses & cords etc. back there. Putting up a bulkhead also allows for mounting all kinds of stuff on both sides.
With the bulkhead installed and a twin size bed in front of that, I still have over 3' of room remaining for a desktop area and chair. I plan on doing mobile computer repairs as supplemental income.
The passenger side is where I plan on building the kitchen & fridge area, but I don't see that area done in time for the RTR so I'll just improvise for now.
Thread title was my sorry excuse for humor, but the bonfire idea was great.

:) The grain in the wood looks really great.  Even tho I'm only 5ft 5in tall I still want the bed longways behind the drivers seat, in my much smaller van.  It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into your build.

If you were offended by my wisecrack I apologize to you, truly.

I think this thread title was just fine.  I bet it brought a smile to lots of folks, even Snow Whites friend Grumpy.   :D

I often donate my time to help others, but I do want you to know that there is a flip side to that situation.
People will expect me to do things for them because they know that I know how to do them. Because they are my "friends", (more like acquaintances), they expect me to work for free. My payment is a pat on the head and being told how wonderful I am.

Here is the other side of it. These same people know how to clean houses, pull weeds, wash cars etc. I never see them doing these things for others without expecting a paycheck. If I asked any of these "friends" to work without getting anything in return, I would be considered the biggest people user and manipulator in town.

Well let me check my schedule.  I have an opening on Tuesday, and I charge $60 an hour.  A guys got to pay the bills...   :D

Danny

I charged $45 a hour to clean and it will be higher for consulting. On the flip side I was always helping someone somehow and now that I have so many restrictions, I have neighbors that have jumped at the chance to return the favor.

Txjaybird - Not offended at all!! I was hoping to get a few laughs out of it and hope "I" didn't offend anybody.
I've been almost ashamed to say how much I paid for the work, I misunderstood him when he gave me the prices.
Burk Const. has been doing work for my Dad as far back as 1956. They put up the metal building my shop is in and they poured a new porch for my Dad 3 weeks ago before the cold set in.
Spike, their head guy told me - $50 per hour and it would take only 4 hours. $200 to relieve my stress over this whole ordeal sounded like a great deal. I took it to them at 8 the next morning, they brought it back a few minutes after Noon. What I didn't realize was... he put 2 guys on it. I paid $400 to get my walls finished.
I need to say, before my ailments started this year, I had the tools AND the knowledge to do the job myself. My hands barely work now, so I had to have help.

I think I paid too much, but it's quality work and behind me now, it's all good.

I think he took advantage of you. Anyone would have taken it for $200 as there was no mention of it needing multiple workers. I do understand what you are going through. I not only did everything for myself, I did it for others as a living in a company called Nitpicker Services. I don't mind paying but it's the quality of the work that is disgusting.

I agree, $50 an hour is reasonable, I guess, but that shouldn't have taken 2 men that long
Oh well, what do I know, I'm not in that business, last did carpentry in the 80s, for income

The quality workmanship will be remembered long after the cost is forgotten. Be happy, it's done. Yea! :)
I used to do all of my own mechanic work, but now days I prefer taking it to a shop. I recognize good work, and those get my repeat business and endorsement.
