At the last RTR I was introduced to a new type of solar panel. Several members owned them and were very happy with them. I was so impressed I have become a distributor.

It is 90 watts, weighs 34 pounds, folds up into it's own suitcase, and is totally plug and play. You can be producing power 5 minutes after opening the box. It costs $425 and that includes free shipping.

I am not going to go into all the details in this post. Instead I am going to send you to my Off-Grid Mobile Living Store on my blog:

http://cheaprvlivingblog.com/bobs-cheap-solar-living-store/

I have a blog post on it and you can ask me questions about it directly there:

http://cheaprvlivingblog.com/2013/04/956/

I was very interested in Bobs Suitcase solar kit that I decided to purchase one for myself

It arrived yesterday well packaged and in a very smart suitcase as described

It was less than two minutes before I had it deployed and had it showing a tad over 16volts @5.45pm PST so it appears to work ,I packed it back up and moved to one of my riverside stops

Set the panels back up 13.41 volts was showing on the multimeter at the battery if nothing else I think this unit will prove invaluable to keep the battery trickle charging at stops before going to bed and in conjunction with a second battery and maybe a quiet Generator should help to stop the dead or low charged battery when using radio or internal lighting in the van .

The unit is not difficult to move around and as I have decided to lose my porta potti it will not add any additional weight to my van.

Being semi urban I have found that my potti requirements are all met either at the Y or on shopping trips or stopovers at Walmart or by the river side

The wiring as Bob had mentioned to me is only just adequate and I shall probably end up rewiring the unit currently I have Jump cables attached going to the battery and am unable to measure any loss from the controller to the battery which is a good thing .

I am keen to see this unit working on other items and hope to report on how it goes .

7.09pm and multimeter is showing 12.75 volts

Royz

update
I have had the the unit on charging the battery for 4 hours this morning and the red LEDs have all just started flickering which is supposed to indicate a fully charged battery
connected a regular mains charger and it went straight into trickle mode so that looks to be a good indicator
I have left the radio and GPS switched on in the Van and that small load has now placed the Leds on but not flickering which shows that its actually charging against that load its currently reading 13.91 Volts
looks very promising.
Royz

This looks really good, especially for camping power. Please send me more information.

Also, what do you recommend to mount on the top of a home made camper (I tend to overdo things). I am in the process of building it.

Hi Arizonatruck,

The suitcase system is perfect for people who can't mount a panel on their roof like Class Bs with such busy and convoluted roofs they can't find a clear space for a panel. But, if you can mount a system on your roof you are better off to buy each component separately. You will get better components and it will cost you less per watt. The suitcase system has one really big advantage in that you can park the van in the shade and put the solar panels out in the sun--keeping the van cool.

Email me at [email protected] and I will help you figure out what you need for your camper. What are you making it out of?
Bob

Hi Bob,
Are these the same panels that were mounted on Katie's roof? They look smaller in your picture.

I hope you all are having a good time at RTR. Stay cool!

Tim
