Hi everybody. My name is Jamie. I don’t own a van, but I liked the name I picked cuz it has a familiar ring to it. And, no, I’m not an artist. I’ve been a lurker for a while. I am fascinated by the lifestyle although I am not a participant, really. I live in a fiver in an RV park. Recently downsized from an apartment. That has been a real eye opener as I discovered how much stuff I had and did not use/need. And I still have stuff to get rid of. Anyhow, I am sooo psyched-up by all the wisdom, humor and comraderie I’ve encountered on CRVL; I just had to join. Every once in a while I have a desire to post a helpful hint about some topic or other that I have experience with. I think I will probably be in the fiver for a while (few years) but hope one day to experience the freedom of living on the road. God willing and my body doesn’t wear out. Until then I have to keep working as a home inspector.
I do own a 5 x 12.5 foot homemade camper. 2000 4runner tow vehicle. Two summers back my 16 year old son and I took a 32 day trip from El Paso (home) to Whistler, Canada. It was a fabulous trip and I think we were both amazed that we could live in/out of our 62 square-foot space. BTW I remained sober and he is still alive…heh. I’ve only made one short excursion since then, but am hoping to start camping more. I’ll try to post some pictures of the rig when I can get over to the storage lot. You can see photos of the trailer we took to Canada, and some build pictures of the current rig at https://www.facebook.com/happitrails. Both trailers were built entirely of foam sandwich panels. I got rid of the pop-top one (that was the one we traveled in) and still have the multi-curved one. Obviously, I did not have solar in mind when I built it. I’m stuck with charging the AGM battery in the field with a genny and charger, as much as I can. Then top it off when I get to grid power via an onboard converter. I’ve thought about a portable solar set-up. In fact, I have 8 each 15amp panels (2 old kits). But I just can’t see humping all that around for weekend camping. Well, I’ve rambled enough. Hope to hear from some of you guys and look forward someday to meeting you. Blessings to all.

Welcome to the CRVL forums Jamie! We're glad that you decided to join. It sounds like you'll be able to add a lot to the forums with all of your experience - starting with a little more information about your trip and that cool little trailer! :)

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome Jamie. I looked at your FB photos. That looks like an amazing trip you had with your son. You'll both have those memories forever! Your curved trailer may not be great for solar but it's beautiful. I love the curves. They look more organic in a way. Well I can't really describe the appeal but I think it is very appealing, at least to me. Boxes with straight lines may be easier to insulate and build onto but curves to me seem more intune with the natural world I guess. Anyway, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for sharing. And I like your name also :)

Welcome!!

Wow, gorgeous work on that build. My father was a cabinet maker who earned his living with carpentry; when he got a chance to use his actual trade, the results were gorgeous... he would have loved your work.

@ gypsychic. Hi! Thanks for your kind words. I loved, loved, loved that trip. And having my son with me was truly a gift. I was amazed when he agreed to ride along. I agree with you that curves have an orgaanic quality that is very appealing. My little trailer is fully insulated since the panels I built it out of are foam core with about an R6 rating. I hope that someday I will have something like a class B or small class C that I can live in off the grid. And just boondock and travel.

Thanks for the kind words and warm welcome.
