I just drop my driver's seat back and sleep there. I'm curious if other people have "built out" cars or have methods for sleeping in them. Especially if they are standard sedans. But even if they are not....curious.

Utilize the space occupied by the back seat and trunk.  In shorter cars, or for taller people, utilize the passenger seat also.  You can remove the front seat, or turn it around.  I removed the bottom section of my back seat, installed 2X4s to make it level, then cut plywood to make a level surface throughout the entire back section of the car.  I can move and twist around as I please all night, and get horizontal, for good sleep.  Personally, I cannot sleep well in the driver seat.

Getting a good night's sleep is the most important thing you can do in vehicle dwelling. I've seen some pretty ingenious beds in passenger car's. Including one where the passenger seat was removed and a platform built that had plenty of storage under it with the top cut into lift up lids to get things out. And during the day the matress would be lifted up by folding the middle and a slip on seat cover that matched the driver's seat was put on it.
Unless you really looked hard you couldn't tell the difference and it looked like any other car. The main thing is that He has a comfortable place to sleep and during the day He could relax and not think much about people walking past his car and seeing it was set up for living in. Take your time and knowing your car and self the best. Work out ideas for what would make YOU. Most comfortable in your vehicle.
And I'm sure if you needed help in building it to suit your needs someone in the community would be happy to help you.
Good luck with your design and hopefully you will be able to post the before and after pictures. It might help another person just starting out to get settled in and comfortable with sleeping.
Thanks for sharing your story, it opens up a topic that is really important. We drive quite a bit and lack of sleep for weeks at a time is dangerous to us and others. Let's make a difference and improve on our living conditions as well. I will be keeping tabs with this topic so ask all the questions you want.

I fold down the rear seats into the floor and put a camping cot or a chaise lounge with pads on it, then regular sheets, pillows, and duvet. I like having it always set up so I can pull over whenever and wherever, put up curtains, pop in ear plugs, turn on the fan and am always surprised when I awake at how well I have slept.

I once had a similar problem. As in the long way to sleep in the car, because the hostels - well, but, it is expensive if you go for 60-90 days on the road. Comes out more than 2000$.
In my case - I tried to sleep even in the trunk. Back .... she was in a terrible state
I tried different variants. But, I decided rather radical methods. I bought new seats that can connect with the rear and thanks to this I can use Camping Cot (ads https://www.listlux.com/camping-cot) Also, after buying it was necessary to modernize - to the size of the machine. My car turns into a big bed.

My car isn't "wagon style". The rear doesn't extend or fold out or down into the trunk area and I'm not comfy in the back, I don't think. I think I am making the driver seat work by putting it in the lounge position, but it isn't long term comfortable.

I don't want to do any permanent changes as my plan is to eventually have a station wagon style car (with the ability to merge rear seating and trunk area), minivan, or van that I can modify/build out entirely. But first I need to save up enough. I'm open to any of the above options that will provide enough sleeping and storage space to live comfy for a few years.

The replacement to this car might take a few months, so I'm shooting to be comfy until then. I have a big road trip planned for October, but not sure if I'll be upgraded by then.

If you're NOT trying to sleep in an urban stealth-like environment, the most common solution I've seen is to park in a dispersed camping spot (BLM, Natl. Forest) and pitch a tent.  I've also seen that many RV parks and Campgrounds have tent areas.

I do realize this may not be what you're looking for, but thought I'd mention it anyway.
