This isn't really mechanical, so I didn't think it would fit there.

So, rock dings hood right in the middle of the front edge, paint came off and rust noticed. Can I just clean up that spot and seal it or do I need to take the paint off far enough out to find the edge of the rust? Somehow I'm guessing I need to find the edge of the rust.

Opinions?

Thanks. :)

Any chance of a picture?

I might be able to do that. I'll check my camera battery to see if it's charged.

Oops! Harder than I thought. I put my camera someplace logical and now I can't find it. I'm going to be on the road for the rest of the day so I'll have to find it later. The ding itself is less than half an inch diameter---I haven't looked real close lately. Matching the paint is expensive. *fingers crossed the rust hasn't gone too far under the paint edges around the ding*

Get some "rust converter" any brand name. Protect the metal until you can repaint.

A little sanding, and a dab of "Spot putty".  After it dries, sand it flush, and apply a bit of touch-up paint.  And Bob's yer uncle!   :)

Will this technique work on the 1/4" x 2ish steel ribcage that's exposed inside my fiberglass high top. When they installed it they welded it to the van roof but never cleaned it up and painted it. It's caused some slight surface rust around the weld?

Wire brush all of the surface rust, thoroughly clean, primer, then paint.

off grid is right. you only need rust convertor if it's scaling. use zinc primer before paint. highdesertranger

I like spray rust converter, and would use it before primer for any rusty metal, the exception being if it's being blasted or ground to white metal again.  Surface rust is enough to cause paint bonding issues, and it's just good practice to use it.  A single spray can will last years for one person.

For the OP:  If you're filling a small chip and color matching I like the touch up pens with the fiberglass bristle tip for cleaning the rust spot.  Then one end is color coat, the other a tiny reservoir of clear coat.  A little more expensive than a spray bomb but a great, tiny, all in one tool good for many years of touch ups on the same vehicle.

Thanks for the info everyone. :) Other things have come up so I haven't been able to look for my camera or think about the ding---it's gone further down my list of priorities. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze it in between some other things here soon.
