Here I was, sittin' around bored and, EUREKA! (damned beans), a memory and a subsequent thought. I remember, around 25 yrs ago, knowing this old guy who lived in his bread truck, which was nicely kitted out. He had this really skookum setup for hot water, which consisted of a few turns of tubing in a hot water tank, the tubing being plumbed into hi s engine coolant. All he'd do is fire up that puppy for a few minutes (or just drive somewhere) and PRESTO.. hot water!
Well, skip to now as I wallow in aged decrepitude whilst perusing the forum posts; looks like some people are striving for a cheap way to cook without an oven and, often, while driving. Well, it wouldn't be all that hard to do basically the same thing, but with the coils submerged in a pot.. either a double boiler setup or direct immersion with SS coils. Whadya think? Am I crazy.. or am I just Willy?

It would be possible if you could get enough heat transfer though if the coolant is 195 degrees and water boils at 212... It might warm up food but that would be about it...

I'm toying with the idea of making some kind of basket to place on the exhaust manifold of the van so I can warm up some reduced fat brats while driving down the road.

Where there's a will, there's a way!

take this out of the inside and cook off the manifold... Did this for over ten years as a trucker... manifold heat around 220deg, but lower due to the air flow... as for containers, anything that wont melt, burn, or destruct while driving... There is a conversation here in cooking discussing this at the moment... for cooking i used tin foil and tinfoil containers without a problem... chilli to grilled ham and cheese to burritos...
