So here I am... finally making a move to become a part of a community of like-minded souls. I am striving to go full-time this year. I am currently taking care of some life business and am in the process of purchasing my van. I sadly had to retire my old family van (a sweet dodge conversion, '98) as it was beyond reliability.
I am trying to choose between a 1996 Ford (67k miles, $4000), or 2000 Dodge Ram (88K miles $6000.) Both are hi-top conversions. Each have pros & cons, but my main concern is reliability, and repairability. I am on my own and I need something that I can count on. I am leaning toward the Ford based on several things, the price and the miles. The Dodge is almost exactly like my old family van (sentimentality...) but the Ford seems to make more sense. Of course, I would love some feedback from experienced folks!

Everyday I write in my journal reminding myself that it is time to follow my dreams and my heart, and not to let fear of the unknown stop me. I so appreciate the knowledge and stories on this site.

Thank you!

I had a '96 E150 and found the I6 engine to be rather weak and problem prone. But maybe that one in ad is a 250 with a v8? can't tell...but certainly does look to be in nice shape! Welcome to the forums :)

Welcome to the CRVL forums 100milemel! I can't give you any advice on the mechanical side but you may want to consider looking for a lighter colored van. The darker ones look so nice but they get very hot when sitting in the sun for even a short period of time.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi and welcome.

Honestly both look like decent buys(If everything is as says).   I would recommend to go look at both quickly.  I would start with the Ford.  The low miles is a good thing, but if it was grandmas and it sat a long time that is not good.  Check them both over well or have a mechanic do it if you are interested.  If he comes  up with anything questionable  see if you can get the price lower.

Vans seem a lot cheaper in your area than mine.

Welcome! Trust yourself that you'll figure out what you need to figure out as you go, but back it up with good advice found in all the threads on this forum.

I'm sure you've seen and read many/all of the posts in Bob's Blog section, too.

Welcome to CRVL   :)

You'll find loads of information and helpful people here.

My father had a Ford Van with the I6 300 ci engine and ran it as his daily vehicle for 10
years.  He loved it and maintained it well but rust began to set in on it.  The guy he sold
it to was still running it last time we saw him.    They are a rugged engine and UPS Trucks
used to use the same engine in my part of the country.

Much will depend on the service and motor oil the original owner used when they owned it, so request that
information and consider it carefully before purchasing.   If you don't have to make a purchase immediately
time is on your side. You can review numerous vehicles out there on the market.  A lot of small companies
have fleets of Vans that they use to deliver their goods and after 5 years they have written them off.  They may actually have lower mileage than you would expect.  But they sell them as is to the public and purchase new Vans without trading in the old ones in order to get lower prices.  You may find some great deals in this
segment of the market.  There is also the option of finding an Automotive Broker and contacting them.  They will want to know what your price range is and how far you are willing to drive to pick up the vehicle.  You can also explain the mileage you are wanting to find in the vehicle as well.  You will pay a small fee for this service but it can save you loads of hassle in hunting for it yourself.  The Broker will call you, email you photos etc, when he finds vehicles that may suit your interest.

Hello and welcome!

Not much help on mechanics but there are many here who will be able to give you some good advice. They have helped me so much.

Fear of the unknown is normal. I just bought a bus. I'm terrified lol. I think the journal is a great idea. You will find lots of support and encouragement in these forums.

Keep following your dreams!
