I'm looking to put a small retractable awning on my van, but I am not sure which one to go with. I like the stealthiness of the bag awnings, but the hard cased roll out type would sure be more convenient (Yet more expensive).

Does anyone have an awning? Any good ones to recommend? Any I should stay away from? Anyone have any experience with the Trimline bag awning by Dometic? That's one I am considering and I have found an exceptional deal on from from a local seller.

I've used the bag awnings on a popup - they are a world apart from the roll-cylinder type I had on the Winnie.

However, I am a sucker for an exceptional deal.

I found one similar on a wrecked popup and bought it for about $50 a couple years ago . Decent shape, only one small tear . It now lives on my 69 shasta Tt. I think i have used it 2-3 times in 5 years. Kinda a pain to roll up, and no stealth at all. An awning is an awning. A 10x10 "easy up" is far stealthier ( is that a real word?) as when you are not using it, its packed away and totally unseen. You can even get screen sides or tent sides for them. Most people i know just use a tarp and spring clamps with guy ropes and teloscopic poles.

Basically you are looking for a sun/rain protection... Why not just attach a heavy duty tarp up for the fraction of the cost... I use 3 military expandable tent poles (Ebay) and a couple of different sized tarps... Here is my tarp set-up on my van...

<img src="http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j... Flamma awnings are designed to mount on the side of vans, come with all the hardware, and easy for two people to install. Not cheap but doable of its that important. I've installed one before in under an hour, and they are quick and easy to open and close

If you know someone who owns a auto body business ( or something similar) with a tax exemption and will order it wholesale, you can get them at a huge discount.

Example:

Had to replace one on our B. Insurance quoted about $1200 for the replacement and installation. After deductible, they gave me a heck for about $700. A friend (owned a repair shop) ordered it, we installed it, and I had about $50 of the insurance check left over (after taking friend and wife out for a nice dinner). Don't recall the original price of the unit, but I think it was about a 40% discount.

Thank you for the suggestions on the awnings. I have decided against a tube style awning for the time being just for the advantage of keeping stealth, possible wind drag while driving and the high cost.

I had a lead on an 8' Trimline locally for $75, but the seller has not returned my call, so I may have missed out on that one.
