Galveston Island is a cool place out in the Gulf, with beaches, historic district and for nightlife "The Strand" area. Easy walking around.
Take the free car/passenger ferry from Bolivar over to the island.

Then Padre Island National Seashore "the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world" where you can camp and drive on the beach, although you'd want to be careful not to get stuck.

From there San Antonio River walk, never been but friends say it's nice.

Then to Joshua Tree National Park, incredible scenery, drive through or camp.

Have to hit Pappy & Harriet's 4 drinks dinner & Live Music. Usually local groups but occasionally a big Name will drop in on the stage.

It's located in Pioneertown, a town built in the 40's to shoot Western Movies.

Enjoy, what kind of rig do you have?

Leave New Orleans... head I-10 east to Gulf Shores Alabama (right on the beach), then travel the Florida coast as far as you wish to go.
