Just be aware that you will be dealing with Globalstar.  I suggest that one research the business practices of that firm before dealing with them...

I've heard lots of bad things about the company but the two people that I know who actually own and use a Spot speak highly of it.

It's pretty tempting for free but you still have to pay the monthly fee.

They are also giving away their Satellite Phone which is $500. But you still have to sign up for the monthly service which is a minimum of $65 a month. You can sign up for a month-to month plan but I bet that wouldn't qualify for the free phone. But, it's still something to think about.

Gillette essentially gave away razors and made their profit on blades.
Kodak essentially gave away cameras and made their profit on film and processing.
Ink jet printer companies essentially gave away the printers and made their profit on ink.
Phone companies give away the cell phones and make their profit on contracts.
Tried and true business model.
