So am looking at these four cylinder bread truck type former FedEx vans. They get 25 mpg with no weight. What are the pitfalls of getting this type of vehicle ? Would I be better off with a 4x4 van that gets 10mpg?

Goal is full time van living. At low cost.

Greetings!

That sounds to me like it may have been designed for city only driving, and might be very underpowered on the road.

Cheers!

These are very interesting the body is light the roof is transparent if you can find the single rear wheel version and are not in a big hurry to get from a to b a great choice . They are city vehicles but I do see them on the freeway. Not sure of when they let them go I thought it was 125K. Sturdy little guys.

It's probably the Cummins 4bt which is the little brother of the Cummins 6bt which is put in Dodge trucks. If it is the 4bt, it is one of the best, most legendary engines ever made! There is a huge market for guys that drop those engines in everything because they consistently get over 20 mpg and run forever.

Step vans are poor off-road so if that is a priority to you skip it. If you want 20 mpg and an engine that will run forever with lots of room and great stealth then run, don't walk, and buy one of those babies!

I will agree if its a 4bt those are great engines. what's the rest of the running gear? those motors were matched up to allot of different drive trains. highdesertranger

Is it the one with the 3.0 liter Isuzu engine? If so, I'd say go for it. Met a guy in a state campground last summer who lives in one and he had nothing but praise for his.
