Hi Guys,

I just joined and I already have a question. :)

Has anyone looked at the new Earthcruiser MOD? The base is 22k - but you can definitely customize it to your own liking. I like the way it looks and can be painted to match your vehicle.

Do you think this is a good investment?

Thanks.

Depends on what your goals are. I'd imagine you won't get near as much input about an upscale type unit on here as one might find on expeditionportal dot com. Earthroamer, and similar builds, are what I had mind when I first started my rig build. I'm just trying to do the poor man's version.

If money were no object and you wanted a one person very, very light, spartan slide in w/ low profile and probably very good resale value then I'd give thumbs up. I'd also wait a yr or two to see how the first production models hold up.

I'm looking for pop-up fittings to incorporate into a DIY version.

Aussie or European supplier maybe?

Very few RV's, campers, vans, trucks, etc are a 'good investment'....most all of them lose market value.

But, will it work for you and provide good value for you

I like vans, I owned one for 4 years, but when it comes to drivetrain choices and powerplant choices, nothing beats a pickup for starting out with building your dream rig.

Maybe that will change in the future, who knows...

John61CT,  Why not use a hurricane hinge like the teardrops?  Fairly cheap, durable, weather resistant...  You could still use gas struts too.

Thanks good idea for a tilt-lift, but my design is all four corners rise, roof stays flat.

kinda pricey in a way for not getting much more than an off ground tent situation. a truck camper will range widely from basic to a wet bath inside and indoor fridge and kitchen situation. I would have to truly see different tc models to compare etc on price before I jumped on that.

we owned a truck camper for many years cause we pulled our 20 ft fishing boat to every state park/lake cg we could. we loved that thing, every convenient in there and was solar equipped and we carried a genny for back up....we had ALL we could want.

so this is not bad for the price in a way, not great for the price in a way LOL

it comes down to what do you need in a living space to make it work for you. Long term vs short term outings.

investment for monetary value? nope. it will be worth almost 1/2 the price the minute you buy it LOL like any 'toy' everyone buys out there. Selling it for a high fair discounted price will even be a nightmare mostly :) Will it last a long time and you get your money out of it, sure, if ya love it and keep it a long time. If you use it, keep it long term and enjoy the hound out of it, then I put that down as a fab investment!!

John61CT,  I was thinking about your idea for a four corner lift top, pondering how to DIY.  I've seen variations of scissor lifts on some pics of the fabric sided hard tops but they seem kinda janky, especially in wind.  I came across a pic of this and I immediately thought of you... Maybe a smaller version of something like this lift screw mechanism could be adapted to each of the four corners so it lifts squarely.
