Okay... all is well. I'm just an ***** :) To "tx2sturgis" credit, it was indeed a fuse. I was not aware that there was an 8amp fuse in the actual dc receptacle itself. I had only checked the blade fuses on my fuse block.

I tested the unit on AC and everything worked great, which got me thinking about the fuses again. A couple of YouTube videos later, and I had a complete video guide.

I now have extra 8amp fuses, but once my confidence level is higher, I'll butt-splice the cord into the 10AWG wire that runs to my fuse block.

Cheers!

yeah keep us updated.  just 90 days doesn't seem like much.  highdesertranger

90 Days isn't much at all.  I think this is likely one of the big differences between the lower end model and their standard line.  For what it's worth, Dyers RV was super cool.

I hope this is a rare occurrence as I just received my CC-40 US a couple of weeks ago. Run on a/c and d/c as test, then as as freezer 20f to note cycle times over 3 days now running 32f for over a week now.
So far the only discrepancy I find is the temperature readings are approx 4 degree's above the control temp setting.

Good outcome!

:D

Just FYI:

If you are using the included cigarette lighter plug, those plug contacts can oxidize, heat up, and can cause the fuse inside to blow even though the current was not overly high.

In other words, ditch the plug and wire it direct, but be sure you have an inline fuse, or the proper fuse in the fuse panel to the cooler.

Maybe don't cut off the plug end until the warranty is up :)

And this is a reminder for all of use to discover what fuses lurk in our appliances and to carry extras. /scribbles note to self

Yeah, a butt-splice was definitely the plan anyway. I just didn't want to cut the cord until after I had some experience with the unit.  What's really odd is that I blew ANOTHER 8amp fuse in the receptacle a couple of days ago... and it was wired into a 7.5 amp fuse on my fuse block too!  The 7.5 amp fuse didn't blow. Shouldn't it have blown first? Thoughts?

I think I'll take one for the team here and order the Dometic CC-40US.  It's the perfect size for what I need and a great bargain to boot.

Did you order this? If so, can you post a review on this Dometic CC-40US?

I did actually!  There are a few posts here in the thread about my experience, but I'll recap.

The Good Stuff
I purchased at Dyers for $335 including delivery and it was here it just a few days.  It fit right between the seats of my Ford e350 perfectly with the door opening from the drivers' side.  The compressor in this unit is on the top vs. the standard bottom placement. This means that the vents are on the top as well, so you don't need to worry so much about blocking the vents. It cools down pretty quickly, is almost completely silent, and it can hold an impressive amount of product.  Because the compressor is on the top, the whole bottom of the unit can be utilized. Contrast this with other units where it's like a "step" with a limited amount of bottom area with a storage area just above the compressor as well.  I favor the way it's done in this model.  As for power consumption, it's minimal at best. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Probably worth mentioning as well, the outside temp on my last trip was around 85 degrees but it seemed to also do well during our recent heat wave of closer to 110.

The "Not so good"...
Just before my most recent get-away, the thing was dead.  No power.  I called the folks at Dyers and they were quite optimistic that their Dometic rep would provide a quick resolution.  Meanwhile, I tried plugging the unit into an AC outlet and it worked, so I knew the unit was probably okay.  Turns out, there's an 8amp fuse in the actual plug that had blown.  After replacing the fuse, all was well.  I had also placed a 7.5 amp fuse in my fusebox too.  During my trip, however, the plug blew another 8amp fuse but left the 7.5 amp fuse in the fusebox intact.  That was about a month ago and I've had no issues since. Given that the 7.5 amp fuse didn't blow, I'm not really worried.  As such, I'll butt-splice the cable shortly as was always the plan.

Do note that the warranty is different, but I can't provide details right now.  Dyers mentioned it was 90 days, but that might be their exchange period.... I just don't know.

The only other issue I have is that the digital readout for the temp is about 8 degrees off.  I now keep a small refrigerator thermometer inside.  As noted, the temp is steady so I can live with that.

Would I buy it again?
Yep.  In fact if I had the room, I'd buy one for a freezer and one for a fridge.  It's been running full time since purchase, and with the exception of the fuse blowing twice, it's done an excellent job. For that price, it can't be beat. Heck, it's cheaper than a Dometic CS18.  But alas, ask me in a year or two and I might have a different opinion. For now, I'm pleased.

I hope that helps :)

T,
I ordered one from Dryers - it should be here tomorrow.
Sounds like I should buy some 7.5 and 8 amp fuses??
I was set to buy a different Dometic that was twice the cost - I am so glad I read your post - Thank you!!

Argh  :(
The Dometic arrived today and when plugged in it will run - but the buttons do not work so it just runs and cools and shuts on and off (like normal I suppose) ... but the controls don't work.
Called Dryers and was told to replace the fuse on the cooler ... I do not think there is one on the cooler is there?
It does the same thing if it is p[lugged in to any of my AC or DC sources.
I could replace the fuse in the DC cable ... but even running on AC the panel buttons won't work.
I guess I will talk to Dometic reps tomorrow.
If you all know of anything that I can try in the meantime (short of boxing it back up and sending it back) please let me know - Thanks!

Well now, that sucks.  As you noted, if you have the same problem with AC and DC, replacing that fuse won't matter.  Not to mention, a fuse is a binary deal... it works or it doesn't (as far as I know.)  My hunch is that it's just a wire/connection that was jostled loose in shipping. Still, not something you should have to deal with and doing so would void the warranty I'm sure.

As sucky as it is, I'd have them ship another unit pronto.  Maybe mention to them that you purchased this right before a big vacation with recommendations from someone on an RV forum.  That might trigger them to realize you have strict timing requirements in addition to your participation in regard to products and reviews.

I look forward to your next update.

Cheers,

I've had this same unit since July, only test run in July for a week on A/C then D/C for a 2nd week. No problems at all. I ran it as a freezer ( 25 F ) on the display, (28 F ) internal thermometer, ambient temp of 80 F.

Just started up 2 days ago on A/C in preparation for a month long road trip, temporary fill of ice cubes and bottled water.
It will run A/C from 300 watt PSW whilst driving, then D/C when camped.

So far I'm pleased with this in place of a 65 Qt Yeti.

I have the Yeti 65 also - I think I will keep it for backup :)

UPDATE: Dyers has been very professional and communication excellent. They contacted Dometic and I received a replacement.
From what I gather - there is some issue with these arriving DOA.
The replacement arrived today and works perfectly! There is even an interior light - I am so happy with this $335 fridge/freezer.
It comes with two plugs - so it can run on AC or DC.

Great news!  So good to hear Dyers was helpful. They were super professional for me as well.  Not to mention... $335 for a 44 QT fridge/freezer... AWESOME!

After reading this thread, I decided to buy one from dyers as well. I figured if it works great, if not, I'll send it back.

Thanks for the info.

Jmel - Dyers was awesome and customer service was very personable and professional.
They contacted Dometic - had a free (for me) return shipping label emailed to me - and the replacement arrived before the UPS came to pick up the one that did not work!!
The replacement is still working good - please post on your review of yours when it arrives :)

It arrives today! That was some fast shipping. I'm in NC and it shipped from Rock Hill SC.

Did they replace yours with the same model or did they upgrade it?

I'm excited. I have some new larger batteries arriving on Monday as well to help on the cloudy days.
