Does directional antenna really help?

I'm considering getting rid of my 4g booster from wilson as it doesn't seem to help boost the signal much at all. Before I do, I wanted to ask if adding a directional antenna really makes much difference?

I have learned to not tell you that what works for me will work for you. That said there have been times that my hotspots only see towers to connect to once I have hooked up the directional antenna. The original magnetic antenna and even the much larger omni directional just don't have the same reach.

I don't understand the logic of this. You're willing to throw away two hundred bucks and have even less chance of pulling in a strong signal?

Sometimes the booster and the external antenna are too close together, and some RF feedback cancels any gain you might get.

Make sure the power light is on, the external magnetic antenna is outside on a metal roof, and the cradle and phone are inside.

Sounds simple, but we have seen examples where the user placed the magnetic antenna inside the vehicle or never even connected it or the power cord.

By getting rid of, I mean returning or selling used.

I recently received a picture of a friends phone showing the tower it connected to using the directional antenna. We were on a pass and nothing received any signal without the directional antenna.

Directional antenna work well but only if you know where the cell tower is. Pointed in the wrong direction and it will do less for you than a standard omnidirectional antennae.

Oh, yeah. No doubt. If it is used properly. There might be exceptions, but that would be unusual. Like if you are parked near semis with large, full trailers that move every half hour sometimes block your signal. An omni directional may mitigate that lost signal instead of repeatedly moving a directional antenna.

Before giving up on the booster I would e-mail WeBoost (new name for Wilson).  They were very helpful when I was having no boost with the supplied omnidirectional antenna.

What was the resolution for you?

chucktate,

After having me run some tests weBoost sent me two new antennas (inside and outside).  That solved the problem.
