Hey folks, you might remember my post a few months back about living in a truck camper beginning this summer. I've decided to live from home for my last year of school, but still invest in some kind of vehicle to commute with, to spend nights in campus lots, weekends at ski mountains, and with a diesel engine so I can do a WVO conversion (engineering project for course credits, among the other benefits). I've been considering a truck and camper for the versatility, and it would fit within my budget of $10,000. While ready to go and versatile, the lack of stealth may cause problems in the long run, so I've been considering a DIY stealth conversion from a diesel cargo van instead. The stealth factor would definitely be appealing for my goals, and the van would likely be a better commuter/DD. Some goals I have are the ability to pull a small trailer, some form of toilet (cassette or blackwater), sink, furnace, propane stove, 3 way fridge, and again... my budget . I was thinking a mid to late 90's econoline with the 7.3, I'm in BC, Canada. What do you guys think about the choices?

Cheers

Hey there! Another one from B.C.; let's take over this site! I'd say a step van would be the cat's ass. If you can get one without dualies and a straight 6 standard, it would totally rock. 10' box and, if you're feeling energetic, swap out the rear spider for an aftermarket locker. It would be a total mission machine and tres funky. ..Willy.
I think the Ford (IH built) 7.3 is one of the best diesel engines put in a van and is a great choice. I don't know much about it, but I have heard it is especially easy to convert to veggie oil. So many were made that parts and service are easy to find. International put tons of them in their medium duty trucks (tow trucks, garbage trucks, buses, etc,). Good solid proven engine. Go for it! Bob
The only issue I see with a van is there is so little room to work on your WVO project under the hood... Heck even a tune up is a total PIA... GL with school and your project...
