I'm trying to figure out a cheap but strong improvisation for the side door....and a screen type barrier for when I have the ramp gate down. Got to keep the cat in, bugs out and well ventilated. Hardware cloth isn't cheap, but doable for the side door along with reg. screen. I thought about 4x8 lattice cut to fit the ramp opening, but would still need screen and hinged 2 piece frame. Anyone dealt successfully with this?

I like the idea of lattice for the ramp door because kitty will almost certainly try to go through the screen if that's all there is on that wide of an opening.

I don't know if it's going to be any cheaper but you could try using noseuum bug netting instead of window screen...hardware cloth won't keep bugs out.

The downside of noseumm netting is that it doesn't let much a breeze through. I use it on the bug net on my backpacking hammock. Need it to keep the black flies from chewing me to pieces here but without a good breeze it can get might warm in that hammock. Kitty might also tear it up easier than they would regular window screening.

If you're interested in the noseuum fabric, let me know and I'll dig up a couple of links to suppliers for you. I paid $3.25 a yard - 60" wide for .9 oz a couple of years ago. Lighter weight stuff is now available.

Thanks Almost There. The screening material needs to let a lot of air through, so noseuum probably wouldn't work for this. I think I'll use both lattice and screen framed with 1x4, and hardware cloth and screen on a 2x2 frame for the side door. I was at Home Depot today and saw a roll of coated wire fencing that might work as well. So, what's a good hammock to consider? I've read a little about them and might give one a try as long as it doesn't mess with my lower back.

A lot of my fellow hammock hangers have moved to sleeping in a hammock full time BECAUSE of lower back problems that are exacerbated by sleeping on a regular mattress.

Head on over to www.hammockforums.net for all things hammock!

They're almost as friendly over there as we are here.... :D :D

I have a DIY bridge hammock and have never even tried a gathered end hammock so I can't tell you which hammock to consider. I CAN tell you that one of the cottage industry hammocks will be at the top of the comfort list as compared to the 'made somewhere else in the world and sold at big box sports stores'.

In the same boat, been studying this for months.  Using mag screens on both doors for now, but the kitten figured them out so need something different this year.  What did you end up with?
