Buying Process

Hello.

Need some comprehensive help from someone, or a link to an book or article regarding the topic of buying a van (or vehicles in general). I have never bought a vehicle and need to know what is involved during the process. I plan on paying the van off on the same day, with no loan. 

Here is a couple questions I have been trying to figure out.

1. Do I always need to get a mechanic to look over a used vehicle and should I get a carfax.com report on the van?

2. What kind of paperwork do I trade off with the seller?
