Hi, I was wondering for a while now if one could camp in one of the BLM dispersal camping sites for free, but still be within reasonable distance to groceries etc. I have a junk truck I have been living in for years and do NOT want to get caught out in the desert if it breaks down. So I was thinking of maybe a town with biking distance? Any suggestions of a spot would be appreciated. Another thing am I likely to be hassled by the authorities by biking to the store? In Florida I could NOT even walk 2 miles without a cop harrassing Me, while going to the library. I am NOT Jacques mesrine, or even John Dillinger, but do not care to be hassled when within the law.

I have very limited experience with dispersed camping.
I'm out here in the Lake Mead Nevada area and everything is a good distance from anything that I've seen so far, I have only been on the north side of the lake so far.
Quartzsite had things closer but we're not talking a big time shopping but they do have a library.

All the dispersed camping we did in the national forest was out & away from 'things' too.

The problem with dispersed camping that close to population is anybody can and will drop in on you. Do you want to leave your vehicle unattended in the boonies while you are away? Down here, you'd come back to find it stripped.

In Arizona it is easy peasy!! If you are willing to be further away it is easier, but I can camp all winter within 7 miles of a national-grocery store chain. I know a couple places I can be 4 miles from the front door of a super Walmart

No problem at all with riding a bicycle into town! The LEO couldn't car less but you will be riding along busy highways so there is always the risk of being hit.

I never worry about leaving my camp. I take reasonable precautions and in 7 years have never had anything taken from my camp from BLM land.

certain areas like bob says it's easy, if you want to be close to town it's not that hard to find a place. I prefer to be as far away from bigger cities as I can. highdesertranger
