Federal law requires banks to verify a land based address before they can issue an account or a credit card for anyone. The banks use a database that allows them to enter an address. After the address is entered the bank can see if the address is residential or commercial.  We have been using a mail forwarding service in South Dakota for 11 years but the building is not listed as residential. It is listed as commercial.  USPS mail boxes don't work either. I established a bank account before we sold our home.  Last week we attempted to make a change to our account and were told that they cannot make any changes to the account if we are using a PMB.  Banking is the one thing we have not found a workaround for because we do not have a land based residential address.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You could rent a room through Craigslist for a month and then "move" when all your paperwork was done. The address would come up as residential and if they did send you anything before letting you go paperless, you would get it from the people that you rented the room from.

I have already been criticized for this in another thread, but it was in one of Bob Wells videos.
Find a vacant house and use that address. If they want to send you something through the mail before letting you go paperless, just check that mail box when it would be inconspicuous. Your name would be on the mail, so I don't see that you could be charged with anything. I think it is only against the law to tamper with someone else's mail.

Here in Nevada you can use an RV park reciept for a months rent to get residency, but when a bank ran the address it would still come up as a business.
Other than that, do you have a friend or relative in the State that you are domiciled in?

I would be concerned that using vacant home addresses might be seen as fraud.

Yes it is blatant fraud on the face of it, plus the USPS violations, which is why the idea gets all the criticism.

At least with the one-month rental, you did actually live there when you applied, they'd have to prove fraudulent intent.

Some commercial services offer the domicile street address may work now but not in future.

Some states apparently Florida have an official dummy address for transient, involves a court declaration.

Best is to use a trusted friend or family member, do your best to ensure they aren't inconvenienced.

I have been using an RV park address for almost three years. No issues with financial institutions. Mailing address is a box number for anything that needs paper.

A hotel/motel is a commercial entity. People do live in motel units and that is their legal residency. Sometimes these are families who don't have a vehicle to live in or a pot to piss in.

To disallow legality to a permanent resident based on a type of dwelling is discrimination. There are laws that do not allow discrimination.

"I saw it on an internet video. I assumed it would be okay for me, as well."

The distinction is not "commercial" or not.

The question is, is it plausible that people live there.

The database "enhancement" services financial companies and gov orgs subscribe to, maintain blacklists

RV campgrounds / trailer parks, motels etc should be fine, and plenty of small business owners live at the same address as their shop.

Best long term solution is a true S&B home address of someone you know and trust.

But letterbox service addresses can and do get kicked back.

This too is part of the Real ID thingie.

"Fraud" is bad ju-ju. I'd not engage in it. It would be a Federal rap, and they are no fun.

I think in the longterm our only real option will be to use a friend or relative's residential address.

The day I signed up with my mail forwarder in Rapid City SD and got my SD driver's license, I went to the bank and opened an account using my mail forwarding address. No problem. That was five years ago. Maybe things have changed since then.

Escapees RV club and mail services. Google it as I can't post links.

Escapees provides physical, non-commercial address service and, most importantly, domicile advice via their affiliated attorney who specializes in domicile issues.

They also have affiliated banking and insurance connections that understand and cater to full-timers. They even have a Care Center for when we get too decrepit to drive (which happens).

That is I think overstating things.

There are millions of homeless, nomads etc, at some point the system will accommodate use as these issues arise more frequently.

Yes in various parts of the country and various private databases, things are changing continuously, and rarely in the direction of easier.

Five years is a very very long time wrt this issue.

Go to a cash advance office that has netspend. They will use the address from your dl and add in your p.o.box as a shipping address. Just did this yesterday . Been going through same issues with bank account for the last month and trying to figure out what to do. But this will work.
