Saw this on Mashable,  it seems Zuckerberg at Facebook is attempting to develop a Drone that can fly for months on end that will deliver internet to the other half of the world that doesn't have internet service.

Those living on the road in their vehicles and in rural areas may benefit from this if a few of these are deployed here in North America where an internet connection isn't possible

This isn't a new idea, but a new twist on something the military used during the Korean War were a portable TV Station carried aboard a large transport Aircraft was used to bring American broadcasting to the troops.

What you think ?

Myself,  It puts the internet where hostile people can't destroy it to prevent others from accessing it.  Thus those with a laptop computer could access it.  The Drone appears to be made of carbon fiber and may even lean towards "Stealth" so it could evade harm.  I'd say this could work out well west of the Mississippi River,
and be of benefit after natural disasters.

Probably philanthropic...just the joy of enabling the unwashed masses to post daily profile updates will be payment enough...

I'm surprised Bezos at Amazon wasn't in on this.  But his Drones are built to deliver the goods ordered on the internet....where there is internet.  =)

How much a month are those folks who have a Hughes Dish on their RV paying for their internet ? I'd bet this flying service will be less expensive.

I'd say he's doing it to get more users on Facebook. More users=more ads=more money. I believe they have already tapped into most of the world with internet access, next logical step is to get internet to the people who don't yet have it so Facebook can keep growing. Personally I hate facebook, but I do have and use it. I've also invested in their stocks and have done pretty well with it. Wish I invested more.

I know what you mean about hating social media.  LOL    I've been on the internet now for about 18 years and
even when I started my Yahoo Messenger was always going off when I was working.   Just girls wanting to talk to
different guys.   I used to sit and wonder.....when I was wanting them to show interest they were quite as mutes,
now they won't quit trying to engage in conversation.  (when you have to type the conversation  )

I listened to guys complaining about "My Space" similar.    Then Facebook came out.    I wonder how long before they come up with a hat with antenna on it where we can just think and communicate with others.   Then we'll all really be in each others heads.

But I agree, the ISP Drone is as much for Zuck as it is for everyone else who doesn't have a connection to the interweb.    I just HOPE he doesn't tie it to "Facebook Only Service" and make the next AOL out of it.   If he does that it should be a FREE service.

But for now at least,  I'm hoping he'll do the right thing since he can more than afford to.
