I am having a lot of questions, sitting here in Denmark and trying to prepare me to the live as a VanDweller in USA:

  • Are there any Calendar that covers AL arrangements and meetings for VanDwellers or how do you get the infos?
  • How are the laws about Metal detecting on the beaches and the land in USA?
  • What is "Down Town" meaning to you?
  • How big a vehicle can fit in a parking spot? I would like to find one that does :)
  • I see lots of videos of peoples vehicles, but no one tells the price of it? I have no idea what the price range is for a High van, Class B or Class C that works well and doesn't break down to much?
  • If I find a good vehicle but it is empty, what would it cost me to furnace it? Bed, compost toilet, stove refrigerator and so on...
Infos from me:
I can bring my disability check form Denmark, that is about 1000$ a month and that must cover ALL my expenses.
I will have about 5-10.000$ as starting budget to find a vehicle and get on the road with.
I need a vehicle that I can stand up in, I am stiff in my back.

It would help me if you would answer the questions you can and asking me the questions you need to know. Together we will all learn :)

Thanks from Maxine (Coming to you in December with a dream of freedom and need of start help :)

as far as I know no calendar summer and winter RTR's the rest is up to you aka contacting other members and getting together. I am on the west coast SF to be exact. Metal detecting: do it until they stop you and explain or ask for advice. Downtown= centerville the middle of the hub. Parking space length: In SF we get about 20 feet or 7 meters it's ok to be a little longer with all the small cars these days. Vehicle choice: Are you mechanically inclined? I would stick with Chevrolet Dodge and Ford late 70's to late 90's. Start with a cheap everything hit the thrift stores get some inexpensive power tools I will guess under $500 dollars for everything.

Hi Wagoneer
Thanks for your answers.
I dont know anything about fixing a car, bur I know lots of woodworking and handling tools.
20 feet sounds good. That is a big vehicle :)

Maxine, what area will you be arriving at? And when? A Class B or C will be in your price range, an older one. A C will give you more headroom. A lot depends on the area as to price. I would look at Craigslist for the area and get a general idea of what fits your price range then post the link and get feedback from the members here. Time of year will also affect price, winter prices will be a bit less than summer, usually. Smaller Class C'cs will fir most places but not all.

I would look for one that was already finished out, it will save you time and probably money.

I tried a friends Class B and it was a great van it was hard on my bad back. Even the hightops one has to duck too much to avoid the air vents or whatever.

Find out the zip code of where you will be arriving and look at RV trader for vehicles close to that zip code. Let the forum know and there may be a member close by who can assist you.

Good Luck, Rob.

I have the option to land in Las Vegas or Los Angeles. I think Loa Angeles will be nicest because of the temperatur?
I will then be standing with my Backpack and nothing else :) From there on out, I will be trying to find a Vehicle.
I will try to land in December, so I have time to find a home and get a little ready to the RTR  at 17. January by Phonix.
I will make an adresse at: jbmailroom.com in Nevada
I do like the A's and C's but I am a little afraid that they are to big to go Boondocking?
I am about 5.5 feet high!
I am using this forum shamelessly and I do get lots of kind help. I need it and is very thankful for your friendly words.

No 3. has those weird signs that I dont understand. And always no other pics? Is it a scam? If yes, then there are many of them!

I think I have to believe that I will be able to find one when I land.

Now I just have to find patience, patience, patience. Going to a talk at the US embassy in near future to get my visa, Working on getting my house sold, divorce, Selling the rest and THEN I am coming to meet you.

Just another quest:
If I make an adresse in Nevada, is it okay to find a vehicle in California? Do I need to go to my state to do anything?
:)

If your residence is Nevada you can buy in Ca. and get a temporary plate and register it in your state. There may be a way to do it without doing in Nevada but I am unaware of any. Nevada will want their taxes on it and registration fees. Bob may know of a workaround, I don't.

Hi Maxine!

You can also go to searchtempest.com and you can search all of craigslist. Type in Class B and it will bring up many choices. It's a good way to get an idea of what's available in the US and prices

There are no need to make it harder den it is, so I'll land in Las Vegas, find a vehicle and if needed I can go south :)

I can't find my way on the page. I am writing Class C motorhome and x'ing pics, Title only, but I am not getting anything but accessories?
:) Maxine

Darn. I thought there were donuts. :)
No 1, looks nice, but has Salvage Title. Bad news.
You can look into a rental RV. I recommend you get an international drivers license while you are home.

Hi ccbreder
Rental RV is out of the question :-I
It is VERY expensive for 6 month, even 1 week!
I will buy one and if time tells me to stay I will fix into a dream castle. If I go back to Denmark, (I doubt it) I'll sell it again!
International drivers licens i s easy to get and I 'll bring it. It makes everything easier :)
Good luck with the donuts.

Maxine, there are so many scammers on Craigslist who will try and separate you from your money, I would not send a penny until you actually lay eyes on the RV.

Look on RV TRADER and check with some dealers there. I looked for both los angeles and las vegas and there were quite a few at or under $10,000. If you can find a dealer that has a unit like you want, email him and explain what you are doing. Again, don't send any money. A reputable dealer will try and sell you a unit, not steal your money.

If you find something of interest in california , call the dealer and ask him how to title it in Nevada. You still have plenty of time to find what you want. I'm sure there are some members on this forum who know of a dealership or live in the area who could assist you.

I'll send the link to RV Trader soon..

Rob
