It has the infamous 5.4L engine in it, that is one of the engines that would break the spark plugs off in the head., and required a special tool to remove them. I would be careful with that one.

There were other problems with that engine besides the sparkplugs falling out. I believe it had camshaft issues as well.

After doing a little more research, that motor is considered by many to be one of the worse motor ever made.

Scared me because my 2006 E-350 super duty has the 5.4 liter engine. It's got normal plugs. I know that the 10 cylinder engine is a total nightmare with those bad plugs. They had a habit of stripping out the threads so that you couldn't install new plugs.  You had to remove the head and install steel sleeves from the inside in order to fix all those issues. I'm going to look more into this. I've only got 62,000 miles so I'm way under the 100,000 miles. But some are saying to change them early so that they don't corrode in place. Yikes.

Here is the issue with the plugs, Ford did finally fix the problem. Its the extended tip that caused the problems, carbon will build up on the tip and the tip will break off in the head.

Yep, my engine has normal looking plugs. Those are the problem ones.

I will disagree  I think the 2003 5.4 is when they got the spark plug issue fixed. From what I have read this is the year you want because it’s the last year of the 2 valve. 2004 was supposed to be a bad year.

There are millions of these vans on the road.
