Hi there, I'm very interested in seeing some interior pics of this beautiful camper!

Mybe fishy, maybe just friendly, reply via CL with 'thanks, I prefer to keep it CL for now"
personally, I have trouble sending pics via interweb due to my setup, though I have recently figured out how to do it, so I've done a lot of texting pics to people via my phone

Ford has some Lemon engines.  Many think of the TRITON series as one of them.

Perhaps the biggest issue is the spark plugs and the cylinder heads.  The plugs tend to
seize in the heads and threads strip requiring the heads to be removed.  $$$ expensive.

You may want to look around on some of the Ford forums and see what they discuss about it.

The 6.0 V8 Diesel is a Lemon too.   But the 7.3 Diesel is highly sought after.

Gasoline wise the 351 V8 Windsor 400M and the 460 V8 that was common in the big Lincolns
were good dependable motors in the Ford line.

Post #23    shows a cut away of a Triton cylinder head where only about 4 threads hold the spark plug.  Often the  plug extends out into the combustion chamber and carbons up making it nearly impossible to remove the plug. (without removing the whole cylinder head)   Just poor engineering.  This should be all the warning you need.  The 6.0 Diesel is just as sadly mal-engineered.

Thanks EDJ, for some reason I thought the plug issue was on newer (after 1999) but guess not. In any case, I don't think this ad is for real due to someone flagging it and due to the way the person responded. Skipping it and back to the search...

This engine was actually built by International, and it has been referred to  as "reliable as a hammer!" You will also find them in medium duty International trucks.
Very reliable, but a bit under powered.
I try to like Ford, but the last one I liked was a 65 Mustang.  It had it's share of trouble too, but was mostly linkage problems. 289 4bbl with a three speed on the floor.

The CL deal you are referring to smells bad. RUN AWAY!

I've heard about the diesels, they're few and far between too. I'm leaning towards GMC/Chevy or a Dodge (dad always had Dodge) and all advice is MORE than welcome.

Guess what, in my endless CL searches I found the exact same van listed as being in the Bronx!!! Same day it's in Baltimore. That and the other clues and I definitely am staying away. I'll bet I will see it in Denver and Sacramento if I look far enough. The picture was like class B van porn, LOL. They only posted one picture.

Be CAREFUL. I live near Baltimore and look at cheap cars on CL as a habit almost everyday. Sometimes, there are some incredible deals on there from Bmore. They have a phone number and everything. Prices are like $2000 for something that should be $3-4k. I wonder if they're waiting for you to come down with cash and rob you. And don't expect cops to respond quickly to a call in Bmore neither. Don't see many cops patrolling around like they used to anymore due to people hassling them and even trying to kill them.

Oh my god, thanks! My sister and bro-in-law live near there and I was going to ask them to look at anything I was serious about (after talking with the seller). My reasoning was that cars down there would be non-rust-buckets and I could take the train down (or fly) and drive the van back home to New England. But I just checked news articles for "Baltimore CL Robbery" and sure enough, just like you say, there have been a lot of bad situations there, even a couple found murdered last year. This is so discouraging. Thank you for the heads-up. I like to think of myself as cautious but still optimistic. I have bought and sold a ton on CL both in the DC area and here in rural New England and have never had a bad experience, but it only takes one...

You could always meet at the police station or at a bank to check out the vehicle.  The bank scenario would allow you to say the money is there if we make a deal.  All transactions inside.

Yes, this would be my go to technique at deterring a potential robbery also. Whenever I'd have to go to a sketchy place, I'd ask the seller if there's a certain branch of a bank nearby where we could meet, that I would look up ahead of time to know that there is, as I don't necessarily have an account there.

But in reality, I'd have the cash in my pocket already. It's usually $2-4k, which is not an unusual amount for, say most minority, city people to stash in their home. A decent street hustler would also try to figure you out. Maybe get you to drive down there and then come up with excuses or whatever, to change locations. Hell, they may even rob you right there at the bank's parking lot or police station parking lot, even with all the cameras around.

I've called the phone numbers of these deals and every time, no one picks up and it goes to voice mail.  They never call back. Maybe I don't sound like the kind of person that they'd want to work with.

Be very careful, CL deals are no jokes nowadays.
