Can a Van Last for 40 Years?

So eventually my ex is going to sell the condo I own half of (as of July 2015) and as a result I'll likely get $50,000 - 60,000 out of it. I could buy it now and make payments but I'd rather avoid that. I was thinking of buying a brand new Transit or Promaster (leaning towards the pm because of...

How to Maximize Comfort as a Vandweller.

There are things that you can do to make your vandwelling experience the best that it can be. After 30 months living full-time in a van this is what I have learned.  1. Spend as much as possible to acquire a good bed. You'll be using it way more than in traditional housing.  2. Being warm...

Not thrilled with my mpg of my Express

I'm getting about 12mpg in the city in my 2012 4.8L Express low top. I was hoping for a couple mpg better than this. Were my expectations too high?

Quilt batting, polyester fiber as insulation?

I've read in a couple places of people using quilt batting, polyester fibre as insulation. Are we sure this isn't going to absorb moisture and mold? Seems like a great cheap solution if those are non-issues.

    Can a 400w Inverter Power a Jigsaw?

I have to cut a hole in my roof for a vent fan and I'm trying to avoid buying a cordless jigsaw. I have a cheap model Black and Decker corded that I'm hoping to use instead.  I have 2 golf cart 6 volts for a total of 225 ah useable. 150w solar panel.  We are getting good sun now so hopefully my...

What's the best way to insulate inside the vans ribs?

Great Stuff absorbs water. Roxul has concerns about tiny particles being imbedded in one's lungs. Thinsulate is super expensive and hard to find. Other ideas?

    Fuel Economy - Chevrolet 4.3litre VS 4.8 litre V8

I'm looking for a new to me van and Im set on an Express or Savana... Chevrolet makes a 4.3litre V6 and a 4.8 litre V8. I estimate I'll be carrying 800lbs rough guess. I'm a minimalist and currently live in a Connect. From what I've read if you are driving up a lot of hills the 4.8 will...

Transit connect owners... I need your help.

In order to set my driver side sliding door to lock from the outside I have adjusted the settings. However, now I am unable to open the door from the inside... which makes exiting very difficult!  There are two mechanisms to adjust...  1. A small black dial on the lower left of the inside of...

    Transit Connect will not lock

For some reason both sliding doors on my Transit Connect will not lock. The vehicle uses some sort of magnetic system. When I press the "lock doors" button on my fob all doors lock except both sliding doors. I fiddled with it for a good 10 minutes but can't figure out if I'm missing something or...

propane single burner stoves as heaters?

I believe that I have read about some vandwellers who use their propane single burner stoves as heaters. I think I recall that Bob Wells does this. Having the ability to turn down the flame seems like a great benefit as you can limit the heat output. When I move into my Connect I will only need...

Serious concern about my Olympian Wave 3

I have a serious concern about my Olympian Wave 3. When it is in the process or running out of propane I get a very strong propane odor in my van. I checked all my connections and this is the third time it has happened when my tank is empty. Once I refill the tank... no odor.   I am not sure if...

Insulation - Am I Doing This Correctly?

A YouTube viewer on one of  my vids has challenged my method of insulation. Him: So you have created a semi-sealed micro-climate where the water vapour can repeatedly condense and vaporise ? - I don't understand how you think this is better than filling the space with close cell (ie. impervious...

How much does a low roof rack effect MPG???

I'm considering putting a roof rack on my Transit Connect on which to adhere my solar panel. The distance between the roof and the bottom of the panel would be about 2 to 3 inches. It will not be a large heavy duty rack. Any idea how much the loss of aerodynamics would decrease my mpg?

Transit Connect - Just joined the Club!

Yesterday I bought a 2010 Transit connect. Yup it's small but if I can make it work, it will save me about $300 a month in gas over my hightop Express.  So first step is to wrap my head around is how to insulate. I'm thinking multiple layers... bubble wrap/fleece blanket  (3 or 4 layers ) /...

Bed bug probem... and my solution... is it viable?

Well, I have a fairly serious bed bug probem in my van. .. which I find both really gross and embarrassing. My van is not dirty and certainly not filthy but these buggers are here nonetheless. I discovered and killed about 20 of them last night. They mainly come out at night as they are...
