Making a living as a traveling poker dealer

The poker world has been dead for the last year but it's coming back like crazy and there seems to be a dealer shortage all around. I'm seeing free and paid classes popping up all over - Texas, Oklahoma, Southern Indiana, Florida, and elsewhere. The WSOP is happening in September and traveling...

    Stealth in Atlantic City?

Thanks guys! Still not sure if I'll take the job, it would be for a few months until my regular job comes back. Guess I'll stick to regular lodgings if I can find one with safe-ish parking. Last time I worked there I got an Airbnb in Absecon which seemed ok. The job is at a casino and they seem...

    Stealth in Atlantic City?

Anyone have any suggestions for parking in/near Atlantic City? I may be getting a job there soon.

    Office/chair in van

If you get an office chair without arms they actually stow pretty well. If the bottom of your murphy bed sits just above the bottom of the seat you only need to account for the back of the chair sticking up next to the bed. I had a very small van so I needed to go a bit more extreme - I needed...

Bank for full time van living

The only real complication I've run into with the credit union network is it can sometimes be hard to find one that will take cash deposits. Sometimes the branch finder on the website would lead me to one saying it will, but then it doesn't and I have to drive even further. It's not a concern...

I've been visited by the police twice in three days...

I spent a really nasty Winter night in a New York state rest stop a few years ago. Low of -10, snowing hard. I was bundled up and pretty comfortable so I slept in late. Around 10am I wake up to my door being opened by a cop. I never heard a knock, but I had earplugs in and was deep asleep so...

NV200 plus space/help converting in New York

Hi, It was just a daily driver in New York but I did stay in pretty cold weather at times. I just removed the insulation recently because it got pretty banged up while I was using the van as a hauler. It was just 1/2" polyiso slapped in place, if I were to do it again I'd make it a little nicer...

    Bye Bye tin cans????

I used to buy chili in cartons 15 years ago. I guess it didn't sell well because I stopped seeing it in stores. It was perfect, especially for camping. Low weight, just toss it on the camp fire when you're finished.

    insulation question

Quick note about polyiso - the R rating actually drops with temperature. XPS (pink/blue rigid foam) actually performs the same or slightly better in very cold weather. The difference is slight, however, so it's ok to use whatever is available locally. XPS is better for gluing together in...

NV200 plus space/help converting in New York

I'm putting my NV200 up for sale. I wanted to post it here before anywhere else to see if anyone was looking for a small van like this but had no place to do a conversion. I have some extra space, tools, and leftover parts and would love to help someone else get on the road now that I'm back in...

    Polyiso+laminate floor teardown results

Yeah, I like that. Any shape 1" thick wood could work as well, just cut a matching hole in the insulation and gorilla glue it into place. BTW I used polyiso because that's what was available locally. XPS (usually blue or pink) should work just as well if that's what they stock where you live.

    Polyiso+laminate floor teardown results

I had to set up my NV200 in a hurry so I went as simple as I could with the floor. 1/2" polyiso sheet with the cheapest, thinnest laminate flooring I could find. The floor of the van has ribs that are about 3/8" high with 2" wide low spots. There are a few large voids, one of which was where the...

    Solar to battery ratio

Running your batteries all the way down will kill them much faster than charging them too fast. Assuming you have enough battery that you have at least 50% remaining when the next charging cycle starts you should be good.

    Prius AC Mileage Effect

I literally ran my house with my Prius for a day and a half when the power went off. Used about 2 gallons of gas. Minimal power usage, just fridge, sump pump, boiler, and computer, but still. I used my old camper van battery/inverter setup as a buffer to handle the peaks. More power can be made...

    Fantastic fan vs maxxair

Something I've never seen mentioned that I prefer about the maxx - it keeps out direct sunlight. I like to sleep during the day and when I had a fantastic fan I'd often get a sliver of light hitting me in the eye. With the maxxfan there aren't any direct paths for the sun to enter. There was...

Mylar sheets on top of the roof?

Aluminet is king here, though it is expensive. Burning Man attendees swear by it. It reflects most of the sun but still allows airflow and it's much stronger than a sheet of mylar. It's also great for extending off the side of the van to create a shaded area outside. If your roof isn't already...

    Roth IRA Vs 401k

I may not have been clear - I was advocating doing all 3 things when possible. Max out match, then max out IRA, then max out 401K. I don't really understand the backdoor IRA thing, I'll have to look into it for next year.

    Roth IRA Vs 401k

Here are my priorities: 1) Contribute enough to my 401k to max out employer matching 2) Contribute the max to an IRA every year I can. You have until tax day to contribute for the previous year so do your taxes and look at the numbers and decide if you want to do traditional or roth. 3)...

What Happens when you Eat too Much?

5 days a week I finish a whole day's food in about 15 minutes because that's how long I have on my break. Weekends I take about an hour. I probably eat more than you did that day other than the excess cookies! I've lost 75 pounds doing this, so I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Battery isolators: What does everyone use?

I tried using that Wirthco on my van with 150 amp alternator and 2 golf cart batteries. It worked fine when the battery was above 50% but when I let it get any lower I ran into the current limit. Those were the times I REALLY needed to be able to charge off my alternator. I switched to this and...
