Doin' the big NASTY engine swap!!

A bud of mine put a new clutch into his VW ready to go to work the next day, got'er done and was cleaning up when he discovered the brand new clutch release bearing still sitting on the bench, right next to the old one.....

    Alaskan Gypsy

Welcome aboard and greetings from New Zealand, where houses median half a million dollars (big city prices, living the sticks is cheaper) and you have to EARN the first 20% to be loaned the rest. I live in my RV. I understand young, dumb and restless, you hear the call and you gots to...

    Doin' the buildout

Fair enough! I did have a smoke detector in the camper, but it got ripped out after the 10th time cooking vapours from the stove tripped it off and nearly caused an underware incident. I've compromised by never having anything running, heaters, stove etc, while I'm away or asleep.

    Doin' the buildout

Sweet conversion! Loving the backing camera, I really want one of those! I'm also thinking a second cam looking sideways right at the back on the passenger's side (left side, in my case) that I can switch to so I can get out of angle parks with confidence if I dont have someone in the shotgun...

    Filling the hours....

Pick up a cheapo acoustic guitar and learn 6 chords. By the time you have 6 nailed, you'll discover there is are 20 more closely related and you'll be laughing for the rest of your life. Travel and music go together like bacon and eggs. Or, if you want much quicker results and a truly historic...

    My Life with Pictures :)

That Redman is beautiful but the Hercules is mad and cuter than a bug's ear! Rotaries were so very nearly a good idea....

    Total conversion cost

The biggest ticket items were the 'new' truck to replace the rusted one at NZD$3300 and NZD$1100 to have the camper body removed from the old truck then installed and certified on the new one. Later the g/box lunched, NZD$1400 when all was said and done for that one, the new clutch at NZD$1075...

Restoring/Updating older Xplorer RV (1989 Ford E-350 van)

Looking good! Now you just need a copy of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" to blast as you head out....

    Setting up a battery bank

As I've discovered, used but usable mobility scooter batts can be had for pennies from a scooter service joint. My camper has been powered for the last year or more by a pair of 12v 30a/h batts I paid not much more than pocket change for. I'll get lights and cd player for 4 days or just lights...

Try living in my country! In order to re-register your ride you have to have a non-p.o box mailing address for the forms......

Nice blog, by the way.

(I'm also guilty of 'hottie scrolling')

Getting ready to move into the van

Good for you! Not sure I'd stay 'up north' over the winter, but even so, it'll be an interesting time for you. Keep us posted!

    Being the New Guy

Alvin Toffler made exactly this point in his somewhat turgid book "The passionless people". Not a bad read if you can wade throught it, particularly since the future(s) he predicted are, to a certain extent, here. He made much of the increasingly impermanent life style lead by an ever...

Would this van be a good deal?

Run away screaming. The number of times I've seen people pick up a junker of some sort (car, boat, motorcycle et al) so they can 'learn to do it up'...........no. It never ends well. It will surely be cheaper in the long run, not mention easier on your sanity, to just pay up and get something...

    A Whole Slew of Questions

Good for you! Most teenagers (me included, when I was) can't think beyond the next 15 minutes.

My g/f hosts woofers on her mini farm, they weed, mow, plant etc if they don't have other skills. One couple built her a wood fired pizza oven using not much more than sand, straw and clay...

How important is a spare tire

My Isuzu NPR Navi has 2 spares on chain hoists under the stern, one front, one back. When I got it, the very 1st thing I did was make sure the jack/breaker bar/lug wrenches etc were all present and correct. As a force of habit I also carry a screed of tools onboard, spanners, 1/2" socket set...
