    van hotels in New York

A story from AP Mobile: Van, taxi latest NYC lodging option for bold, cheap visitors NEW YORK (AP) - There's no electricity, no running water, no bathroom. But travelers to New York City bold enough to book a parked van for $22 a night through Airbnb do get a real bed and a spectacular view of...

Non tourist locations between Yellowstone and GNP

My sister and her husband like to travel in a 32 Class A. They're getting up there in years, and are less comfortable about traveling alone. We've travelled with them more often lately. So when they told us about plans to go to Yellowstone and Glacier National Park,  mentioning this might be...

    Backup cameras

Backup cameras. Have been considering a backup camera for the TC, and would like one with a portable wireless monitor so, at night, it would double as a security camera, since the camera portion would be directly over the door of the camper anyway. Anyone knowledgeable about them? Recommendations?

    Tesla's 10 kilowatt home battery

I'll let some electrical whiz run the real numbers, but just thinking offhand.  At 12v, I figure this is about an 833ah battery. Weighs 200 pounds and costs $3500, gauranteed for ten years. An Agm battery setup - at approximately 1/2 the capacity and probably slightly higher weight might cost...

Hoping Renogy has a sense of humor

After buying Renogy's solar kit, I liked their FB page, and got an 'energy tip' from them, advising me I could save a lot money by putting my computer to sleep when I was done using it. I posted a reply, asking if it was expensive to put my computer to sleep. They replied with a lengthy post...

    Happy Christmas

Here's hoping everyone has a safe and warm Christmas, and someone who cares for them with whom to share it - friend or family.

    Vmp Voc question on panels

The Renogy 100 watt has a Vmp of 18.9 volts and a Voc of 22.5 volts. Haven't had a chance to check out the amperage, but in overcast skies the MPPT controller shows the panel's are producing 20 - 22 volts - higher than I expected. The batteries have been at full charge, so I havent seen it...

    Wire crimping tutorial

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/wire_termination&page=1 An interesting tutorial on wire crimping. Been looking around due to comments made on my solar install thread.

    Candles and ceramic heaters

Probably better for smaller spaces, but my filters pulled in these two articles today. The first is a Kickstarter project in the works, the second an inexpensive DIY version. Thought someone might be interest in trying the DIY version...

    Soldering wire

I have to splice a #10 wire (aluminum, I assume, from the silver color of the strands) from the solar panels back together. My original plan included crossing the bare ends, twisting them, then soldering the splice and covering with heat shrink material. I've acquired a HF hydraulic crimper...

    The State of the Economy

We've been hijacking the Stock Market thread with discussions of the economy, so I thought I'd start this thread so the Stock Market thread can go back to discussing the Stock Market. I find it interesting, when talking to face to face with people, about economics, that most people can't even...

    MPPT controller with PWM output?

Can anyone explain what this phrase means? Considering a MPPT controller, but in the features it states PWM output. Doesn't sound encouraging to me..

    Solar charger controller question

After the solar install last night, it was dark, and the controller monitor advised '0 volts 0 amps' being produced by the array. This morning is very gray and overcast. The monitor reads the same. I double checked all connections when I made them, and there are no faults or anything showing...

    Documenting my solar install

I'm going to post my solar install as it goes along; that way people can ask questions or offer advice As I proceed. Might save me some some hassle or mistakes along the way. When it's done, it can be compiled into a better thread for posterior's - I mean posterity's - sake. This is inside the...

Fuse types - solar power system

Asked Renolgy about fuse types. Recommended ANL, and in a separate email stated I'd need a 25a and a 32a fuse (guess I'll use a 30 amp). Can't find ANL fuses that low. What type fuses are most of you using for your solar array/battery fusing? Or an automotive inline circuit breaker?

    Renogy price reductions...

Hmmmmph... Just noticed Renogy dropped the price on their 400 watt (nonRV) kit by about $50 to $619. This has the entry PMW controller, 4 panels, connectors and mounts, and 10' of 10AWG cable that runs from the panel's to the controller. You provide your own battery cable. Didn't notice if...
