I have some cold weather camping experience but definitely not sustained -40C camping! Not sure how you would survive that other than having either an extremely well insulated camper ($$$) or a wood stove in the camper...  And of course, insulated tanks not exposed.

Depending on your budget, Four Wheel Camper sells a shell slide-in camper that is light weight and decently insulated (with the arctic package)

We LOVE our Casita! Light-weight, durable and just big enough for the 2 of us and our dog.

We recently made the same move ... Our decision fell onto a 17 foot Casita travel trailer towed by an SUV.  Leave the Casita on the campground and you have your vehicle free for shopping/exploring.  We used to have 1 vehicle RV and it got old very quickly to always have to break camp ... Not to...

I'd reconsider shopping for an RV in California, especially the bay area.  There are much cheaper areas to shop for an RV ...

I second the GSA auctions (government vehicles). Well maintained and you can get a great deal there! Do your research in advance and remember that you have to pay sales tax on top of the auction price.

In our experience, most class C RVs get 6-8 MPG and most class B Rvs get 14-20 MPG.
