Air bubbles in (diesel) fuel line from tank

The fuel tank and lines on my truck are new in the last 2,500 miles, but in the last 200 it began to stall occasionally with air in the lines. So I spliced in a section of transparent hose where the line connects to the engine to see what's going on, and the bubbles start after about 5 miles of...

    Propane fridge repair?

A retired friend of mine in AZ just had his propane fridge die and is looking for a repair person. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

    Grumman P30 starter problems

Since I bought it, my grumman sometimes wouldn't crank with the initial turn of the key. Trying again always did the trick, but in the last three days it's refused to start twice. Waiting ~1 hour "fixed" it, but in the meantime my husky and I were stuck by the side of the road. The starter...

    Stepvan insurance options

Geico and State Farm were happy to insure my Grumman as a passenger van, but both companies were a little shady*. Unfortunately there aren't too many other options - Travelers and Allstate both said that they don't insure former commercial vehicles (even ones titled as private passenger vans)...

Huge insurance rate increase with Geico in MN

Just got off the phone with a Geico rep who told me that the 40% increase on my last bill was a statewide rate hike. But there's nothing about it in the news, just some articles a few months ago about 5-10% hikes in the Midwest. Anyone else hit with a similar hike? Take care, Karl

    Height of stepvans

My high-top Grumman is about 9'6", but I just saw an ad for a nearly identical van with 16" wheels that claimed it was 10'11". Does anyone know if Grumman ever made one that tall?

    Grumman Kubvan

I saw one of these for sale a while ago, and it just looks kinda nifty: https://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics-american/kurbside-cklassic-1983-grumman-kubvan-tiny-fwd-vw-diesel-powered-and-very-rare/

Registering & insuring a stepvan in MN

The DMV office was happy to register my Grumman as a "passenger vehicle" and GEICO was equally happy to sell me a non-commercial policy for it (~$500/year).

Replace slip yoke, or whole driveshaft

Does anyone known if you need to replace the driveshaft when you replace a worn slip yoke on a GM 1 ton truck?

    Diesel mechanic recommendations (Any state)

Does anyone have a diesel mechanic that they trust or love? The mechanic who has my P30 has been mostly non-responsive for a few weeks, and it's looking like a really good idea to move it :s Honestly I'm happy to go out of the way if necessary. But since it's currently in Hartford and was...

Cheap nickel metal hydride trickle charger

I've been getting pretty good results with this trickle-charging method: https://www.powerstream.com/NiMH.htm The batteries I've tested charge almost as fast as they do on my Tenergy, EBL and XTAR chargers (which is a lot better than I expected), and they get a LOT less hot (barely warm vs...

Cost of stepvan & Cummins repairs?

Does anyone have a rough idea of what it would cost to replace the radiator or engine mounts on a Cummins B series engine like the 4BT or 6BT?  Asking because of some bad news from the shop that inspected a really nice-looking P30 that I found recently.

Cheap 7.3 IDI pass-through box truck

The seller is a little confused about location*, but here's an ad for a 1992 passthrough box truck with a 7.3 IDI diesel, low roof, wide rear doors and (allegedly) only 46,000 miles for $4200: https://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/d/denver-1992-ford-350-step-van-camper/7090425737.html *It's...

Advice on a high-miles Grumman Kurbmaster?

I just went to look at a late-80s Kurbmaster step van with 320,000 miles on the odometer. Everything above the chassis was in surprisingly good shape, and the body was actually nicer than the newer vans I've looked at so far: It's made of a heavier gauge of aluminum with more reinforcing...

    absorption chillers

That's the generic term for the type of heat-pump that's used in LP-powered fridges. What's interesting about them is that they can be run from other heat sources: waste heat from an oil lamp, engine cooling water or a dedicated gasoline/diesel burner if you want to splurge. There have been...

    Choosing a step van

I went to look at a 2005 Workhorse P42 step van last week, and everything about it seemed great except the asking price ($8,500). It had 90,000 miles on the odometer and it was easy to drive and had no rust. The engine was a Ford L4 diesel mated to an automatic transmission. It appears that...

    Hi from Minneapolis

Hi everybody :) I'm brand new here, but I've been doing car- and bike-camping since I was a kid, and have always been a bit of a nomad. Over the last few years mobile living has gone from being a long-term goal to having an immediate practical purpose, so I'm trying to do my homework before...
