20 pounds of poop on the street -- is this us?

I think it's a bit weird for a homeless person to save up a couple months worth of shit & then drop it off in front of a homeless shelter. Especially when it's a photo posted by a user with a bunch of anti-homeless posts/comments. Just seems off

    Carbon Offsetting

Spiff- I looked it up, it turns out you're right about carbon offsets being analogous to indulgences in certain instances. If I were to offset enough carbon to compensate for the damage I've caused, I can continue offsetting, thus purchasing an indulgence for another person (though to be...

    Carbon Offsetting

It's more akin to penance than indulgence. In the sacrament of penance, being sorry & making effort to reform are required. Likewise, buying carbon offsets isn't enough to cause change, personal reform is required. However, even with drastic reform, it is impossible to reach 0 impact without...

    Carbon Offsetting

^ I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who leave messes for someone else to clean up. It's the same laziness and selfishness that causes people to leave trash all over their campsites. Or the indifference to learning the impacts of their actions that causes people to bury toilet paper...

    Massachusetts domicile for health care

I don't know if anything has changed, but as far as I know, all state Medicaid should cover ER visits in another state. It's not "contracted" which means you might have to forward bills to Medicaid. The hospital I worked at sent the bills directly to Medicaid, they just did it all by hand...

    Carbon Offsetting

We can't afford to buy carbon offsets. So every website I visit, I go through Ecosia. If my search rate stays consistent I should offset about 75% of my family's emissions this year. It's not perfect, but it's what I can do right now

Women Only: Removal of Castile Soap from Hair

I use Dr Bronners. I added about a tbsp baking soda to the soap for the first 2 months during the adjustment phase. I rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar (any kind works). I slowly spaced out my washings, I'm at every 5-7 days now. I've been using for 4 months or so & my hair seems to have...

    How do you make money?

@Fivealive sorry if I'm asking too many questions, if I can do this job it could solve my family's financial issues! I can take apart a home pc & put it back together (I've always done my own upgrades), set up a home network, install software & OSes, create partitions & make bootable disks/usbs...

What certifications would you recommend for someone wanting to start this?

    A game for/about dwelling

Van Life Trail sounds great! It might be morbid, but as kids we'd compete to see who could kill off the settlers fastest in Oregon Trail. Having funny ways the character can get hurt (like falling into the grand canyon taking a selfie) might be something to add :)

    pepper spray?

Just fyi, some buildings also have their own rules on pepper spray. I had a small one on my keychain that got taken by campus police when I went in to the hospital to give birth. Dunno if that rule was because it was a hospital or university

USB powered Sonic pod for laundry sale

I emailed them to ask about using on diapers as these are about the dirtiest thing that can be washed. They said it wouldn't work for diapers. So I'd assume they wouldn't work for anything set in or chemically difficult to remove from fabric. Since you have to use soap & water with it, I'd say...

    Committed or trying it out?

We're in the third group, we can't afford to continue renting. I will be able to leave a couple boxes with family, but we're selling all our furniture & appliances. We are currently planning on this being a temporary thing, like 3-10 years. We'd like the kids to go to a school for at least...

changing church attendance locations on the road

For Catholic churches, I've never had an issue visiting other parishes while traveling. I'm rather introverted, so I appreciate that there's no expectation of interacting with strangers besides the kiss of peace. However, there are always plenty of ppl willing to be sociable if a person wants...

    Bloating Camper?

The YouTube channel "Living Big in a Tiny House" has a video of someone living in a canal boat living a nomadic life. I think it's in the UK though, I guess there's canals that used to be used for shipping so you can go all over without having to transport the boat overland.

    No-refrigeration foods

You might look at tvp (textured vegetable protein) as a substitute for ground meat, nutritional yeast & powdered milk. They're all healthy, light weight, easy to use & cheap. The tvp comes dehydrated, I get a beef flavor that's fortified with vitamins. It's a complete protein since it's soy. The...

    Hello to all!

We're in the process of downsizing too :) I'm finding that the more I part with, the easier it's getting. About a month ago I sold a bunch of books, including my collected works of Thoreau. Today I got the urge to read Walden, so I'm listening to it on librivox. It's so freeing to give up the...

    Insurance

The health insurance can vary a lot depending on where you are & income. I've have a $12/mo premium getting a subsidy through the ACA,  it also took care of my deductible & most of my copays (silver plan). I've had insurance through an employer cost $200/mo. Getting insurance through the...

    Preparing to Escape from Rent

I'm so happy I found this forum, I thought I'd introduce myself!  My family is preparing to move into a TT to get away from feeling trapped by rent. My partner & I live with our 2 small kids. We're planning on living in a 5th wheel pulled by a diesel truck converted to burn waste vegetable...
