    My first van purchase...please help!

Hadn't thought about low miles on an older van meaning it's sat idle for awhile.  (then it begs the question - why?) I wondered about the rust too, up in the wheel wells behind the tires.  But we live in the Pacific Northwest.  We have 4 seasons...rain, rain, rain, and hot.  9 months out of the...

    My first van purchase...please help!

LOL.  Thanks for the encouragement.  I thought some folks may look down on me for not fully embracing roughing it.  :) (There's a thread for glampers??) I can't wait either!  I'm getting impatient!!!!!!!!!!!!  I want to get started.  Finding the van is the hard part!!

Ugh, I didn't know about the 5 digit odometers.  No, don't need all the fixtures.  I just want an empty shell.  If I buy something with stuff in it, I'll have to take it all out and try to sell it.

What do you all think of this? https://bend.craigslist.org/cto/d/1995-chevy-work-van/6241446728.html It's not pretty but has low miles and only 2 owners. I wouldn't take it unless he came down on the price. (And of course I'd have it inspected by a dealership mechanic first.)

Good info.  I was hoping they'd be more willing to drop the price once they knew I had cash in hand.  Perhaps not.  I know some places earn their money on the financing so they actually lose money to cash buyers.   I've used Kelly Blue Book before.  Hadn't seen this one yet.  Thanks for the link.

Very good advice here!!!  I had already decided that my answer to the price question would be, "How about you let ME worry about price.  You just show me what you've got."  (within the specs that I've asked for) You are super awesome with the links.  Thank you again.  (and it wasn't lost on me...

    My first van purchase...please help!

Funny and helpful at the same time.  :) I stopped at 2 van lots yesterday dressed for work.  (business attire...skirt and blouse)  I walked on the lot, walked straight up to a salesman and told him I was looking for a Chevy Express cargo van with at least a 4.8 with a V8, at least 1998 but...

    My first van purchase...please help!

Yes, I've come across this already.  3 pages of what the van has but no mention of the number of miles or the type of engine. I'm a newbie and not very mechanically knowledgeable (yet  )...what do you mean by "front end"? What do you mean by "back to back test drives" and why is...

    My first van purchase...please help!

$5000 was a shot in the dark.  I haven't actually started to price things out yet.  I just figured with all the electronics (solar panels, converter, etc.) it would cost a bit.   And I'll admit, I'm going prissy.   ;)  I love to tent camp, cook over an open fire, etc.  However, that is for short...

Happily Single Mom in the Pacific NW

"3 months may not be enough time"  Well that's good to know.  I haven't taken the time to plan out the trip yet.  Just dreaming.  In the near future I'll order that year's curriculum and take a closer look at the specific events/locations he'll be learning about and tailor the trip around that...

    My first van purchase...please help!

Wow, really???  Am I just looking in the wrong place?  I live in Salem, Oregon and have been trying to stay within a 10 hr drive radius.  Is this just unrealistic?  There just doesn't seem to be anything in my area.   So far, I've only looked at one in person.  The rest have been Craigslist and...

    My first van purchase...please help!

I didn't know you could do that!  Nice to know.  I did try it and unfortunately, I didn't see anything I hadn't already seen in my area searches.  But what's nice about it is the "one stop shopping".  Doing area searches within a 10 hr drive radius was getting tedious!  (My Wyoming upbringing...

    My first van purchase...please help!

I read through this.  Toward the end it seemed he was leaning toward a camper over a pick up.  I did find some useful info tho so thank you!! Not going full time yet.  Right now that's just a dream.  For now, I plan to use it to get away every week-end and then when my youngest son is older...

    My first van purchase...please help!

Thank you everyone. Based on your advice, I decided to let this one go. What are the maximum number of miles I should look for? Is 100,000 still a good target?

    My first van purchase...please help!

Hi All, Thanks to this forum, I've decided to purchase a Chevy Express (extended) cargo van, at least 2500, V8, at least 4.8L.  Preferably 1998 or newer, ideally 2010 or newer (for the 6 speed).  I was shooting for around 100,000 miles for around $5000.  Is this realistic?  What is the life...

Happily Single Mom in the Pacific NW

Hi Everyone! I don't have a van yet but am in the research phase.  Stumbled across several of Bob's youtube videos and then this website.  Incredibly helpful!!! I have 4 children.  In about 6-12 months I'll have only one still at home.  I homeschool and as I was looking ahead to the year...
