    Van vs Pickup

"I had no idea you could get a truck spec'd out like that for such a low price. " The trick is to order from the factory and get what is you want without paying for all the extra fluff. Everything on the dealer lots around me were priced between $60 and $80,000. You don't get instant...

For those interested in Capri truck campers...

I sure wish there were more reviews and opinions as to the quality and long term durability of these campers. Matt

    2016 GMC Savana - $19000 - 32K miles - V8 - 6 Speed Overdrive

Just be aware the Chevy is a previous daily rental. I've always been skeptical of the rental agency's maintenance and the driving habits of renters. Matt

    Van vs Pickup

I factory ordered a 2017 F350 4x4 Supercab Long Bed.  $36,700 plus tax and license.  Here's my build in no particular order: XL Trim (no chrome and manual windows) 6.2 Gas engine Camper Package Trailer Towing Package 6 Speed 6R140 Auto Trans (This trans is std. on the F350; not F250.  Same...

    Van vs Pickup

Lack of passthrough is an issue in regards to bugging out in a sketchy situation and anytime the weather is less than desirable.  BUT the ability to keep a firearm and alcohol (I know ... not a good mix) in a livable space separated from the drivers seat has advantages in regards to law. Matt

    Van vs Pickup

For the last year or so I've been going through this exercise.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I'm going with a 4x4 pickup + camper.  Got the pickup.  Now I have to get the camper.  Plan to hit the road full time this January. Matt

    Gear research

Art, take a look at Capri Campers.  They have a couple different models (Cowboy & Retreat).  You can start with a shell and add from there.  This will allow you to control the weight of your camper. Matt

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

To clarify, I think most of us are simply trying to find a solution to the Chevy Express's open differential that can leave us stuck on flat ground.  There aren't many options.  Being able to go down a forest service road with some level of confidence is a bonus.  Being able to meet grandma on...

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

gapper2, It certainly is confusing. The way I understand it is, and again I could be wrong, is: - A LSD transfers the power from the slipping wheel to the other, but both wheels do not have power at the same time. - A locker sends power to both wheels simultaneously. I believe that is...

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

I'm not sure if I've been proven wrong, but my original post which started this thread was a heads-up that the Eaton (also called Detroit) Tru Trac is not available for late model Chevy Express vans. This, to me, is significant because I believe the Eaton Tru Trac LSD is the best solution for...

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

This is what I learned also.  I wanted an Eaton Detroit Tru Trac.  My local differential shop told me it was not available for the current Chevy Express.  They did not try to steer me towards another locker either.  Their suggestion was to not buy a Chevy Express and get something with a real...

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

tx2sturgis, Looking at the 1st link I just see an overview. Kind of a locker 101, but I did not dig any deeper. The 2nd link does show lockers available for the Dana 70 but not in the gear ratio of the Dana 70 in the Chevy Express (3.42) unless 4.10 and down works. I don't know. I'm just...

    Chevy Express Rear Differential Info

Disclaimer: I do not know the full Express history.  The information below applies to the current Express models and possibly the whole generation: A requirement of mine is to get off the pavement and down some forest service roads and such.  Nothing too rough, but I'd like to do some dispersed...

Found Chevy Express Van Access but...Need Advice ASAP

I'm surprised I don't hear more about side access panels.  I'd think they'd be very popular among van dwellers and contractors alike.  I've never seen one in person and never advertised as a feature on a van for sale.  Pretty rare it seems.  Other than a loss of storage space to keep the view...

C'est la vie [(say lah vee) GMC 4.8 V8

FWIW - I had a Chevy fleet dealer tell me the 4.8 will not be offered in the 2018 Express/Savanna.  Instead they will offer the 4.3 V6, and continue to offer the 6.0 V8 and the small diesel. Matt

    Hello

Jeff, I recently came across this persons perspective on the whole camper van build issue.  He makes some points counter to popular belief but I see some logic in his analysis: http://slabcity.net/members/camper_dan I'd be curious what others think.  I don't yet have any personal experience...
