    Typical fulltime vandweller

There is a noticeable difference between this forum and others such as the Reddit Vandwellers. Here, we tend to be older, we tend to be in RVs instead of vans, and we tend to be in the Southwest. Reddit is younger, more vans, and more geographically spread out.

    Go right ahead.   :)

    Who's behind your user name

It's my mom's fault. Actually, it's my dad's fault: I'm a "Junior". My parents had utterly no imagination at all whatever. (sigh) Don't name your kid "junior".

    The "Social Contract"

I like taxes. Taxes pay for "civilization", and I like "civilization".

    The "Social Contract"

Meh, the idea itself is silly. Humans are social animals. We evolved in social groups, and we can't live outside of social groups any more than a honeybee can. Look around you. Everything you have, everything, was made and transported to you by somebody else. If someone dropped you in the woods...

Ambitious artist brainstorming ideas to make a sustainable living

What salable job skills do you have? Which of them can you do while mobile? There you are. It's either that, or rob gas stations.

    Portable Power Supply

So what was the total cost, compared to a similar premanufactured version?

    critters

My view is perhaps a bit biased, since I have kept spiders, tarantulas, scorpions and snakes as pets and I like them. :) But critters of all sorts need food and water. If they cannot find either in your vehicle, there's no reason for them to stay there. They're not stupid--they won't stay...

Fires and smoke in the southeast, what gives?

It's really not unusual this time of year. It's the dry season and the Southeast is the lightning capitol of the world. When I lived in Florida, we had grass fires all the damn time.

    Insurance with Progressive

Most insurance companies will not in sure a DIY conversion. They are afraid you effed something up and will burn it to a crisp and stick them with the bill. Most companies will also not insure a vehicle as an RV unless it is titled as an RV. My van is insured as ..... a van. A plain ole...

A LA Times article. I think LaVonne is a member

It's ALWAYS the same things. People who park forever and don't move. People who dump all their crap on the street. People who panhandle everyone around. It is of course just a tiny handful of us who do any of those things. But we all get to pay the price for it anyway. :(

    Ice Chest cooling

Yep. Once winter comes everyone will want to be telling us all about their wonderful candle-flowerpot heater. ;)

    Generators and Remain Stealth

I've had people park near me with "quiet" generators. I wanted to kill them.

    The Future of Van Life

As always, it is the small number of shitheads who cause all the problems. But we end up paying the price anyway. (sigh)

Vanlife or Boatlife, this guy couldn't decide.

Probably helpful when the hurricane approaches. :)

    Ice Chest cooling

Some math.... As a pound of ice melts, it absorbs roughly 150 BTUs of heat energy from the surrounding air. A common size of small portable air conditioner that can be run in a van from a generator or shore power is around 2500 BTUs. That means if you want to get the same cooling energy from an...

A little income on the side

Ironic, since they virtually killed off the taxicab business.....

    The Future of Van Life

Mother Nature will inevitably do it for us. Though we probably won't like the results very much.

Can you do this on $1,000/mo.?

I make a lot more than I spend.
