If you go without A/C, why do you?

If you study demographics and US population centers, you will notice that up until the early 1900's almost all of the major population centers were in the Northern States. It wasn't until A/C became affordable and wide spread use of it began that people began to settle the South in significant...

    DIY Skylight Idea

It always baffles me when people cut holes in perfectly good roofs. Time causes skylights to leak..... period. Expensive or cheap, they all leak.

    Transmission Education Center

If you have an older unit.... never.... Never... NEVER EVER DO A TRANSMISSION FLUSH!!!!! The potential for long term damage is simply too high. Google it, read the horror stories of transmission failures 100's or even 1,000's of miles after such a service. Just say NO! To any "professional"...

    Recirculating Shower

The dirtiest part about cleaning yourself is your "bum". The "dirt" there can harbor bacteria that can make one quite ill. This is a reason pools have chlorine, washing machines drain into septics, as do showers. If you filter AND chlorinate, you might be on to something. Dave

was camping at onion harvest time

Back in Biblical times it was known as "gleaning" and was a form of welfare, feeding the poor among us. It was expected that people would come after the harvest and take what they could find. Dave

Is Off Gassing Something I Should Be Concerned About?

We all must educate and assume a level of risk that we are comfortable with. I have two golf cart batteries in my Van, in a acid proof box but not vented. I'm not worried about it....... Dave

What about vans from a University Maintenance Dept?

Many drivers over many years, work study students, part time help, no sense of ownership, just passing through, an I don't care attitute often equates a beat vehicle, often abused and mistreated. Dave

VW says it will build the new microbus.

Hydrogen comes with it's own issues, number one is that it doesn't occur naturally in a useable form. It takes energy to pull hydrogen out if other forms of energy. Hydrogen is difficult to store and difficult to transport. No, it is NOT the fuel of the future. I do agree that electric or...

    Tools

I carry WAY more tools than I need to, but I like to be prepared for those unexpected things. I'm the guy that you want to pull over and help when you are stranded! I wish I could bring my whole tool box but 50 years of wrenching has helped me narrow my travel tool kit down to this little (but...

I would have starved if it hadn't stopped raining

Broke, Poor, whatever term you like means VERY different things to different people. I married, had kids and worked hard to,provide housing, clothing and food for the family. Were we broke? No, not at all but we were stretching every dollar I made! There were NOT any luxuries during that time...

Van Hasn't Run For 8 Years, Starting It

Sit back for a bit and think. Do some math, figure out what it will cost to get that Van on the road. Lets begin with what I see, and from your photos, rust isn't an issue to worry about. Hood, Grille Radiator support A/C condensor and charge. Belts Hoses Coolant Thermostat Air filter Fuel...

VW says it will build the new microbus.

100% electric vehicles are currently limited to local trips for the long range travel ability is simply not there. They are a toy for the wealthy or short range commuters / errand runners right now. For those manufacturers with a charging network, you cannot stray far off the "beaten path"...

Fear of not finding a place to camp

When are you going? Avoid the Summer Months!! Yes it is warmer during this time but the sheer number of people traveling is overwhelming! Leave after Labor Day and travel into the Fall / early Winter. You will never want for an available site to lay your head down. Maybe on a few Peak Fall...
