Tell me about the Chevy Uplander vs. Toyota 4Runner

I'm looking at what's plentiful in my area and someone I know recommends the Toyota, but I just discovered the Uplander. It seems that most of the used Uplanders are priced lower than 4Runners.   Is an Uplander a good car?  Is it actually some other Maker's car re-branded as a Chevy or...

    Volvo: yea or nay?

Thanks, all. After the first few responses, I crossed Volvo off my list.

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Yes, but I bet you could use one of those fat quilted pot warmers once it got to the simmer stage, keep it in the sun, and it will continue to cook slowly. Or use a wood fire or other fuel rather than propane?

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Kaylee, I have a cookbook on my shelf called The Brilliant Bean, published in 1988 by Sally and Martin Stone. In it, they say that all split peas cook quickly and don't need to be soaked at all! They have a recipe for split pea soup, but you'll have to adjust it for nomad methods and your...

Finding NHTSA recalls when looking up a VIN

Here is an example of some Recalls looking quite minor and others more serious.  Below are the Recalls listed for a 2005 Toyota 4Runner I like: 2010-02-03  NHTSA Recalls Details: Equipment > other > labels 2010-02-03  NHTSA Recalls Details: Equipment > other > labels 2011-02-24  NHTSA Recalls...

Hmm, looks like Volvo should be taken off my list to consider.

Finding NHTSA recalls when looking up a VIN

Just wanted to add that I have been taking any vehicles with NHTSA Recalls off my list of potentials to check out. But is that necessary? I really liked many of the cars that had Recalls and was bummed to nix them. But I'm uncertain about the meaning of seeing a Recall listed in a VIN lookup...

    Checking out first vehicle

Thank you for these recommendations! I don't know anyone personally who'd be able to check out a vehicle for me, and I was stressed over how I could find someone to do a pre-purchase inspection. After seeing your post, I looked at the websites for both services and LemonSquad costs a little...

    Volvo: yea or nay?

Do you mean that one can only get repairs at a dealership? What about indie mechanic places?

    Volvo: yea or nay?

What is your opinion on Volvos?  I searched and found a few posts here that gave high praise for the XC70. And others say Volvos are very reliable. I've always had the impression they are very safe cars. I also found other posts saying Volvos are "always in the shop" for repairs.  It...

Finding NHTSA recalls when looking up a VIN

In my search for a vehicle, if an ad that interests me includes the car's VIN, I've been looking it up at vehiclehistory.com (it's free), and it seems that many have one or more NHTSA Recalls listed in their details.  Some recalls seem to me to be for minor issues, but I'm not really sure. My...

Any of you ever literally abandon your sticks 'n bricks home to go nomad?

No, you've got that right. I wanted to know if anyone became a nomad after having to abandon their home and belongings in order to get out quick, or knew someone who needed to. But owl offered their perspective as a landlord, which is fine. I'm still interested in hearing from people who may...

No worries! I did not take offense at all; nor was my response, which you quoted, directed at you.

Added factory cruise control to 2005 Express van

Glad you were able to do what you wanted with it. I've never really understood what cruise control is, nor how it works. Why is it a necessity for you?

Ease? Relaxation? It's good to hear from people for whom nomadship worked out and became enjoyable, especially if there was some stress, conflict, or urgency surrounding initially getting on the road.

This forum is a place to ask questions, is it not? I don't believe there's a rule that we need to justify our questions with a purpose or reason for asking.

Sit, Stay, Good Girl/Boy! 14 days of poop

Inspired by one of my junior high school teachers from many years ago, I always say, "Keep It Simple, Sweetie." I like that much better, it always makes me feel good to say it.
