    Nomadic Community

Participate in this forum! Many of us meet up in real life. If you like FaceBook, there are many groups there. Do you like yoga? There's at least one FB group for nomadic yogis. Do you like a particular area of the country? There's probably a group of camper/travelers for that area. I'm not a...

    OREGON '23...............Postcards from the Road

Update - still hanging out in my bother's apartment lot. During the day I am at the hospital or some airconditioned space, coming back for the night around 7 or so. It's running into the 90s here, way too hot for me. My poor brother has been diagnosed with metastatic brain cancer. So I will be...

Things to do to keep feeling "normal" while living out of your van?

You sound young. I was never normal, and this used to bother me greatly. I remember being around 10, my dad yelling at me - "why don't you do so-and-so like normal people do?" - stamping my foot and yelling back "because I'm not normal!". It was true. I had scored high on some tests, and...

    OREGON '23...............Postcards from the Road

Thanks Ben. Unfortunately, things are not well at all. I was never camping with my brother, he doesn't do that. I was however camping out in the parking lot of his apartment while he was in the hospital. Long story short, he is on a fair number of psych meds that keep him stable, lost his home...

12v electric stove OR Rice Cooker in a Minivan with a 12v freezer & 12v fridge for a healthy diet power requirements?

A simple rice cooker is a surprisingly useful way to cook food. Roger Ebert wrote a totally delightful book about it - https://www.amazon.com/Pot-How-Use-Mystery-Romance/dp/0740791427 A blog post which is essentially a preview of the book -...

    When it's time to stop.

Yes, there are occasions - very rare - where people are prosecuted for failed suicide attempts. (Here's an example from 2018(!) https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/policing/2020/03/05/prosecuting-suicide-mental-health-issue-not-a-crime/4873427002/) Traditionally, the catholic church...

    When it's time to stop.

Some people never get past denial, no matter how long the situation goes on.

    When it's time to stop.

If you do this, make sure you understand what the resort's rule about older vehicles is. You may not have the right to just put any TT on your lot.

    When it's time to stop.

I think certain people insist on hanging on (either hanging on themselves or deciding another person should hang on) because they expect a miracle. They think they're owed, maybe? I dunno.

Funny prompt! - Come up with a fake company name/decal that makes people not want what is inside the van

I like the idea, but - Many states have strict rules about what must be included in a business sign on a vehicle. Often include a business tax number or similar business ID. So be careful if you do this.

    When it's time to stop.

Definitely easier on the person who finds you... My very dear friend - who died before he got the chance to use it - said he'd try fentanyl. Sadly, it might be easier to find than heroin these days.

Looking for YOUR firsthand suggestions for free camping in northern North Dakota and northern Montana (HWY 2 area)

Thanks for the hint! My daughter is planning to move to Illinois (Carbondale area) this year, and of course she wants me to come visit. Heading through the northern tier on a non-interstate sounds like a treat.

Any considerations when blocking windows with walls?

I've seen people do that. I always wonder about condensation, but then I always wonder about condensation, which is why my cargo van has no added insulation or walls. Also I think it is a dead giveaway that someone is living in the van, if that matters to you.

Two 100w vs. 1 200w for RV use?

Something that might or might not be a factor for you is physical space and weight. In my van, both were very much in play, so I have a 200 ah LiFePo.

I know what you mean - the sun is SUPPOSED to set over the ocean! Nothing can convince me otherwise… Also, the grass is supposed to be golden in the summer.

RV park life, is it affordable for low income?

Yup, everything runs slower these days. Plus - I noticed a while back that my old comfortable padding has started to move around!

I bought an SUV now what?

And don't forget youtube videos of folks who are travelling in SUVs. First step - build a comfortable bed. You MUST have one. Given your height, most likely you need a long-ways bed. Don't build it out of 2x4s! too heavy and take up too much underbed space. Second step - go camping in your...
