    Telescopes

I have an 8" dobsonian, hand made in a class taught by John Dobson himself. It is WAAAYYYY too big for me to cart around, so sadly it's been stored for a good 10 years now. If anyone here has a place for it, I'd be happy to give it away...

    Intro

If you're not already a camper, it would be foolish to sell everything right now and leap into full-time van dwelling. Start going camping now in the vehicle you have with the stuff you have. There will be plenty of things you can see and experience within a few hours' drive of where you live...

    Rocket stove and thermos cooking

I have a small InstantPot and a 3-qt stovetop pressure cooker - which of course doubles as my large saucepan.

    Newbie-Doobie-Doo!

The only thing you really NEED starting out is a comfortable way to sleep. If you're not already a camper, then start right now with the van you have and the stuff you already have or can buy inexpensively at a thrift store. It's the best way to learn what YOU really need and how YOU should be...

Thousands travel out of Burning Man as desert turns to mud

I know that you can buy into a group camp, and the cost of your food is included in your purchase price. It would not surprise to me learn that some of the people attending Burning Man come with the express purpose of feeding people for free. They show up for Rainbow Gatherings and other...

Thousands travel out of Burning Man as desert turns to mud

Sounds like she went with a specific group. Food and drink are not provided by Burning Man. Organizers have enough to do without providing food to 70,000 people for 9 days. (My mind boggles...) https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/04/us/burning-man-heavy-rain-preparation/index.html

    24/7 Chat About Anything

Get a belt-driven machine - see my post above. I do know that people into long distance sailing sometimes carry hand-cranked belt-driven machines for mending sails. As I recall, pffaf had a couple of models that were desired for this use (Pffaf 30 was one.). But I'd think that any full-size hand...

    24/7 Chat About Anything

I sewed a canvas tent with flat-felled seams on my Featherweight once. No, the motor was often not up to doing what I was asking it to do. The nice thing about a belt-driven machine is you can hand turn the wheel. (I went through several needles as I recall.)

Thousands travel out of Burning Man as desert turns to mud

I don't know why anyone is even trying to drive in that. Unless you're an experienced mudder, you are going nowhere, I don't care what your schedule says you are supposed to be doing. Might as well sit where you are.

"The Instant Pot and the Miracle Kitchen Devices of Yesteryear"

Yup. I have one of those hand sharpeners, and use it nearly every time I use the knife. Other things regarding sharp knives - Hand wash only. Do not just throw your knife in a drawer. I use a leather roll.

"The Instant Pot and the Miracle Kitchen Devices of Yesteryear"

I tried a mandoline. I found that for just me, I was just as happy using a knife. No, I can't get the uniformity. But a mandoline saved me no time, as a knife is fast and easy to clean, while a mandoline is neither. And it takes up noticeably more space than a knife does.

    Rocket stove and thermos cooking

Well, somewhere I have the instructions for making a rocket stove out of cinderblocks... My coleman one-burner does just fine at heating food. And it weighs a lot less! What do you use for the thermal part? I've been going to make a cozy bag since about forever. But the vacuum pots made for...

"The Instant Pot and the Miracle Kitchen Devices of Yesteryear"

I'm so freakin' old, I remember when an Earl Scheib paint job was $29.99 - "no ups, no extras"! (I see towboater beat me to it!)

If I need to be TOWED to a mechanic?

AAA is great, and I wouldn't be without it. That said Two caveats - 1) AAA drivers will not go "off-road" to collect you. Now there is clerly some wiggle room here, as they will come to the LTVAs in Quartzsite, which are mostly off-road, in the sense of not being paved. However, they are...
