You don't need a gun in the wilderness

Excellent article in Outside magazine by an author very familiar with firearms: https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/hiking-and-backpacking/dont-hike-with-guns/ This isn't an invitation to start arguing about "guns in America." It's a thoughtful piece by an an outdoor writer...

    I've been a member for some time.....but.........

Same here. I often feel like I have just as much in common with the Gen X folks as I do with Boomers. I read one article that called our generational cohort "Generation Jones." Google that and you'll get a bunch of references, incl even a Wikipedia article :D

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

Agree, in general. I've always floated the following ideas as how I think this can shake out: Starting now -> future: Continue to build out solar, wind, and hydro power where it's viable. Near term: Replace coal plants with natural gas, which have half the carbon output. Start building modern*...

    1/2 ton camper

Thanks for the photos! Could you, or anyone who owns one of these, comment on some more details RE: how they're built / durability ? I like that they use an aluminum frame, but how about the roof ? (one piece ? periodic sealing needed ?), the walls, insulation, etc... ?

    Colorado River water use cuts

Thanks for the reminder for folks not to get their political knickers in a twist 😄. And also for linking to reputable news sources (I have a friend who works at Reuters).

When computer is necessary Vs IOS ?

An iPad Pro model with a keyboard are really all the "laptop" 90+% of people need in general. Same can be said of a Chromebook, if you live in the Google ecosystem vs. Apple. I've used and own both, but I recommend the Apple ecosystem for almost all "regular folks."

Off topic posts split from "How do u live on $700/month, truly?"

And remember, gas at over $4/gal. back then equates to over $5/gal. in today's prices. When gas went way up during the Bush administration, the actual "hit" on consumers was greater than the current high fuel prices. Also, very important to know, presidential administrations have very little...

A HEALTHIER approach to Van Life? YOUR best build.

I have to shake my head when I see one of these "Instagram rigs" up for sale on Facebook or wherever. They try pricing it to "get out of it what they put into it" and it rivals the cost of some new or lightly used Class B RVs from a decent mfg. For a well-used, sometimes amateurish van...

    Keep your vehicle doors locked

Thanks, you beat me to it! Suffered through two semesters of graduate-level research methods & statistical analysis back in my college days, and it gives me violent facial tics to see statistics misused to "prove" some socio-political stance... 😁

    Visible Limitations

VPNs are a fine solution for several issues around geographical location (e.g. using streaming services limited to other countries) and security. I recommend using a VPN under specific circumstances. But this cybersecurity engineer and former network engineer can't fathom how routing all your...

    Visible Limitations

Indeed. Carriers will throttle speed for MVNOs (and some of their own customers with cheaper plans) via Quality of Service (QoS) configs in their equipment. It's like the old engineering rule of thumb: "Fast. Cheap. High quality. Pick any two." ;)

    ProMs-Dodge or Transit?

Search Youtube for a channel by a young man named Brad Ling. He has two videos of interest here - one about removing the "non-removable" seats in the Sienna, and one about dealing with the airbag error msg after the seat removal.

Which Vehicle to Choose for Forest Road Boondocking?

Yep. Of course, you shouldn't join a wait list unless you're serious. They are, after all, trying to run a business. A small, family-run business which by the completion date estimates is quite busy. This is no different than any other camper-building concern I've seen. These things are just...

How can I make money with my van?

Maybe medical delivery driver ? Deliver prescriptions, samples to/from doctor's offices and labs, etc... I don't recall those folks having to lift 50 lbs. Could be worth looking into.

    Visible Limitations

The Wirecutter has recently updated their recommendations for mobile phone plans. See https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-wireless-carrier/ For less expensive plans, here are carriers the MVNOs re-sell: Visible, TracFone, StraightTalk --> Verizon Mint, Metro --> T-Mobile Cricket...

how to find space to safely store a van (so it doesn't get vandalized, stolen, etc when on-street parking near stix n brix)

Yeah, getting kind of tired of that myself. And heck, I'm from Texas where we have a lot of pride in our own state. I get the impression that a majority of the "Calif. bashing" is basically a dog whistle for a certain set of political viewpoints. I've spent time over the years in Calif. and it...

    ProMs-Dodge or Transit?

From everything I've read and researched, Promasters and Transits are equally "reliable" (both kind of middling, nothing like a Toyota or Honda). Each have their quirks and issues. There are Dodge/Chrysler and Ford dealers all over the U.S., so that's helpful. If a low-roof van wouldn't bother...

    Visible Limitations

The whole family has been on Visible for over a year now and we're generally happy with it. As long as your phone can "see" a Verizon cell tower, you should have coverage - since Visible is a MVNO, wholly-owned by Verizon. The only speed issues I've had are in congested urban and suburban areas...

Prices for used vans have skyrocketed! Any ideas for buying a used TALL VAN for less?

I found photos on-line of RAM Promaster Window Vans going back to 2015. Or were you speaking of completely kitted out passenger vans ? (and even the window vans were avail with rows of passenger seats installed from various dealers or third party outfitters).
