cheap small device (but with keyboard) specifically for surfing Web - recommendations?

"Canned" docker containers would definitely make this easier for sure - good point. As for the last paragraph, we might have to agree to disagree. I've been a cybersecurity engineer for almost 15 years and while I technically see your point, I don't trust "security by obscurity." But hey, good...

cheap small device (but with keyboard) specifically for surfing Web - recommendations?

Refurbished products directly from Apple itself are a very good deal. They're basically "as good as new." OTOH, I'd be very skeptical of refurbed Apple products from other sources. You could get a gem, or a stinker...

    Holidays are for the slaves……..

Someone in the thread above was sort of making the tired, old argument that Xmas is a poor/bad/disrespectful abbreviation for Christmas, which really isn't true. No big deal, just kinda makes my eye twitch... 😄

That really depends on who you trust. The employees at the VPN provider (e.g. NordVPN, PIA, etc...) or "Bobby Random Hacker" sniffing the wifi traffic at the local coffee shop... 😄 If you're very privacy-focused, you can setup your own VPN service using a cloud provider like AWS, Linode...

cheap small device (but with keyboard) specifically for surfing Web - recommendations?

I have a Lenovo Chromebook and it's quite decent for such things. The real vs. on-screen keyboard is much easier to deal with, and Google keeps recent Chromebook models up to date with frequent ChromeOS patches/updates. If you want specific recommendations from an IT geek, let me know :geek:

    Holidays are for the slaves……..

A quick PSA... The "X" in "Xmas" is the Greek letter chi, and "Christ" in Greek is χριστός (chrīstós), meaning "anointed one". So it's perfectly legit, and traditional, for Christians to use that abbreviation. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

    BVan Options (Class B)

I really hope we as a forum community can get past this. I also had the idea that the "Van Living Forum" was for full- or part-time nomads and wannabes of all sorts. In my mind, communities are better if they are not needlessly exclusive...

    Exploitive?

Which was also the main topic of Jessica Bruder's book by the same name on which the film was somewhat based. BTW, I highly recommend the book.

Options for maintaining car insurance with no physical address

Native Texan here. Yes, Texas requires yearly safety inspections. But if you're out of state when the date rolls around, no problem being a bit late. There are provisions for being out of state, see https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/vehicle-inspection/faq/general-inspection under "Motorist...

    Slab City

My son lives there and I really enjoy Chicago. Most of the city is quite decent and isn't some sort of crime-ridden war zone.

Almost Free No Data Caps Internet T.V. And Movies

I've had excellent customer service from Visible, the few times I've had to contact them. Granted it's via on-line chat from their website, but that isn't difficult and the people there were competent and friendly. One time they even volunteered to have a voice call as that would make the...

Almost Free No Data Caps Internet T.V. And Movies

Note that if you have the more expensive* Visible plan, you'll get premium Verizon access with no quality of service (QoS) speed limitations. i.e. if congested cell towers are your problem, you'll stay at full-speed while they dial down other users first. *relatively speaking. $45/mo for a...

Wow, Nevada residency is apparently expensive!!

Yeah, Texas is the same way + really high property taxes, too. Our total tax rates are right up there with Calif., just in different ways...

    America's Quietest Roads

True dat. Last time I checked, Apple iPads had to incl cellular data capability (e.g. 4G LTE or I suppose 5G now) before GPS apps would work. Wi-Fi only models need not apply.

    Missing vanlifer in British Columbia

Jaqueline McDermott, 22, from Kitchener (ON, Canada), has been reported missing in B.C., and her family is putting out a plea across the country for help. “We want to make sure that we are amplifying this message beyond just B.C. because I’m worried that she’s not there anymore,” said Nathalie...

    What are you reading?

A fantasy novel called Alpha and Omega by the king of alternate history authors, Harry Turtledove. Plot is basically, "What would happen if the ancient prophecy of the End of Days came true?" (and no, Turtledove is not a writer of "Christian" books, just mainstream SF&F). And in case it needs...

    Best Blanket

This is exactly what I do with my rectangular LL Bean sleeping bag (rated for 20 deg F, have used it on Scout campouts down to about 28 or so). Makes a great comforter and it's nice to have a full-blown, zip up sleeping bag handy at times. It's a polyfill bag, not goose or duck down, but very warm.

You don't need a gun in the wilderness

So just to be clear, I was raised with guns. My father was a WWII vet and taught me gun safety and how to shoot. We took a rifle and a pistol when we went camping. I am in no way "anti-gun" in the proper circumstances. I found the article interesting because it's a thoughtful, reason-based...
