vans, curtain rod between cockpit & living area: how do you secure it? - part 2

I put 1/4"-20 PlusNut inserts on either side of the van, just below the roofline and just above the seatbelt shoulder harness attachment points. Into those I put 1/4"-20 Eye Bolts. I strung plastic coated cable between them with a small turnbuckle on the drivers side. Cranked it nice and tight...

    Universal RV Hook-up Adapter?

Thanks for all of the great advice! I already knew some power sources at campgrounds and state parks can be dodgey. I have a plug type outlet tester and a non-contact tester already. This is only to power a single outlet for laptops, phone charging and a small desktop type fan for drying gear...

2020 Ford Transit Adds AWD / New Engines

Back on topic, I'm still about 5 years out from an upgrade, but it's nice to know AWD is coming to the Transit. There should be a few used AWD models in my price range by then! I'm not looking to venture off-road, but the realities of crossing the Rockies in late fall or early Spring and Winter...

    Universal RV Hook-up Adapter?

I want to be able to occasionally use a conventional RV site with a hookup for electric. Even some state campgrounds only supply electric to sites via 30 amp or 50 amp service, no standard 110 outlet. I only want to run a few 110v devices, charge batteries, electronics, small fan, etc. so a...

    Stabilizer for hitch-mount cargo carrier?

+1 on anything with a threaded nut style hitch pin. Threaded hitch pins are the best for stopping all rattles and stabilizing cargo racks in hitches. Downside (upside?) is that it takes a bit more effort to remove pin.

    Guitar mounting ideas anyone?

Less secure, looks good, good if you require constant access/decoration... The same method as a floor guitar stand; two arms covered with soft foam to rest the body in an upright position, two fingers covered in foam that cradle the neck, with some soft bungees across body and neck. More...

Help... insulating lower part of E250?

I have an E150 and because I was boxing out around these lower areas, I insulated the boxes themselves with 1.5" of EPS pink board. I used only a layer of foil faced polyethylene foam over the lower walls themselves before I fitted the paneling. I'd be careful spraying foam into some of the...

How do I make a futon with seatbelts in my van?

I pulled a bench that folded into 1/2 a bed out of my project van and put it on the curb. It was one of two from an older 80's Ford E150 conversion that my step-dad had owned. He put the bench into the 2001 van to have a rear seat. These benches didn't have seat belts attached to them, but...

Bed / Mattress Height (non High top van)?

I'm pretty tall and wanted storage under my bed in my E150. Milk crates are 10.5" tall and I had an assortment of bins about 12" tall so I limited storage space height to 12.5" I used 1.5" thick lumber for the bed struts with 1/2 ply on top. With 1/2" insulation and 1/2" ply on the floor, the...

"Why Wyoming’s public lands are locked up" in High Country News

+1 to rvwandering on the summation and identifying the real issues with the Bundys.

    2018 Promaster 136" HT Build

Congrats on your build! I'm keeping an eye on your thread for my future "one day" big dollar build. Good to see you went with Noico. I recommend it to everyone. It has a huge impact on noise levels in the van, both rolling down the road and when parked in the rain. People underestimate the role...

    Swiss cheese plywood bed frame

My bed platform is for an RV queen 60" x 75" width-ways in a Ford E-150. There are storage boxes around the wheel wells so the widest span is 44". It has to hold two adults; I'm 6'6" and 250+lbs, my GF is considerably smaller. I made composite bed supports spanning the boxes using 1.5" tall...

    Self tapping screws?WTF

I bought Teks self-tapping screws at Lowes and they worked like a charm. No need to pre-drill and even on slow drill speeds they cut through metal on my E150 and held like a charm. I bought the ones with a domed Phillips head and a slight rim, like a built-in washer. They were shiny, low profile...

Can a Van Last for 40 Years?

There have been a lot of great responses already, I'll keep my thoughts short.... Will you last 40 years? Health issues can plague anyone, you might not be physically able or want to live in a van for 40 years. Will you want to be driving a huge van and climbing in and out at 62? 72? 82? You...

    Bare Plywood Subfloor - Treat?

One of the reasons to seal plywood is not for rotting, even with the worst condensation you won't get plywood to rot in the van. But with CDX you might get delamination and if you have any leaks, you will get water staining. I treat my van build like a boat build. All 6 sides (yes 6, top...

Using a High Lift as Winch with a 1-ton?

I have "winched" full-sized Pick-up trucks and Jeeps with a Hi-Lift. It does work, but it's a PITA due to the jack wanting to pivot as you apply pressure and the short pull length before you need to take a new bite. What usually ends up happening is you use about half of the pull of the...

Impermanent Roof Storage for Naked Vehicles

Have you considered adding a receiver hitch to you Sienna? It isn't technically a permanent mod as it can be unbolted. It is also pretty invisible when not in use. With a receiver hitch in place you can now add a cargo rack and hardbox for storage. If you get to an area with friends who have a...

    Correct order for layering insulation

Mirror window tint is the best option for reflecting heat but isn't always legal in some areas. It reflects heat right at the glass minimizing radiant heat. As you noted, dark window tint is needed to hide reflectix effectively in a stealth situation. Has anyone tried professional vehicle wrap...
