    Mike Rowe Philosophy

I remember when I was a kid, maybe 2nd or 3rd grade, and the teacher was asking everyone what they wanted to be when they grew up. Being a kid, I didn't really understand my father's job. He ran a company that did metal fabrication and build storage tanks, but he had taken me to the shop once...

    Anyone else use tablet computers?

WoW, or any other video game, will not run well, or at all, on a tablet unless it was written for one. Real computer games like WoW, Call of Duty, etc. are made to run on machines with separate graphics processors since they take such a heavy processing load. I would recommend a gaming-capable...

    Mike Rowe Philosophy

I believe Mike's cause with promoting skilled blue collar jobs is about filling a need there is out there. It isn't so much ditch digging as heavy equipment operators, machinists, fabricators, etc. Several have said it already, but when our economy was strong, unions were strong and helped...

Idea to save fuel costs for Van Dwellers in the city... - Scooter.

Another option I have been reading about is a motorized hub conversion for a regular bike. This consists of a hub and wheel which replaces your regular bike wheel along with a battery. It assists you while you ride your bike, allowing you to either coast on motor power or have it assist when...

    Buying vehicle with 200k+ miles

Something I started doing years ago with my car (I am van shopping now) is that I take it to the dealer for oil changes. I'm sure this varies, but my local dealer charges $28 for an oil change, but they also go over the vehicle and check for other issues (in the hopes that they can repair them...

    Credit Freeze

You are correct! I did not realize that the 7 year required a police report. Thanks for the correction. Also, if you are active duty military, you can put a 1 year alert on as well (for deployments).

Am I the only one that misses standing up?

Yeah, the manual is around $6,000 and change installed. I think there are a couple other places that do them, but I can't recall the name. Still, this gives enough space to stand (6'10"). Their high top fixed tops are about the same price. and give up to 6'5".

Am I the only one that misses standing up?

What about one of those Sportsmobile aftermarket pop-tops?

    Swooning with van lust.

Here is an option. According to this guy, the manual lift is a bit over $6K, and the electric is over $8K. That is steep, but this is a professional job. Maybe not what you are looking for, but it would solve your problem. You could stand when you were camped (as long as you weren't stealth...

How foolish would I be to custom build a high-top on a van? (Read: Cut roof off)

I think to get the strongest build you'd use a wood frame and then cover it with fiberglass. The wood could be reinforced before you glass it at the points where you are going to attach solar, roof racks, etc.

Electrical system to run a refrigerator?

Not sure if you guys saw this. Several videos breaking down what may have happened, but after watching it, I will be saving for the 12v refrigerator. [video=youtube]

    pricing a conversion van

I'm new here. Can someone explain the philosophy of the paint and decals on conversion vans? Is it an auto manufacturer contest to see who can come up with the butt-ugliest color/pattern combination? Are there prizes? :P

    America's Ugliest Accent

How the heck did Louisville get on there? I was raised in Louisville, and there really isn't much of an accent there. In a lot of other places in Kentucky, you could cut the accent with a knife, but not so much in Louisville. Now, I think there should definitely be an Alabama city on there...

    Credit Freeze

You can also call all three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), and have them put a fraud alert on your credit report. This will require extra steps be taken before any new account may be opened. It stops the people who do things like walk into a store and open an...

Economic collapse and when the SHTF

I would have to disagree with the folks saying to live in a coastal area in Florida. In a hypothetical collapse, you would lose weather forecasting, and hurricanes are really no fun at all, especially in a vehicle. I think everyone gets just a little too excited about this, though. We have...

    Storing gasoline when traveling

+1 on what the poster above said about fuel stabilizer. I used to work in a store that did small engine repair, and the number 1 problem we had was bad gas. Gasoline with ethanol starts to go bad within 2 weeks, so add stabilizer to every can of fresh gas as soon as you get it. I have done...
