    Campbell’s split pea soup

LOL! +1 :) Thanks Qxxx for the ratio & info... and Deep Thought. :) I'm still committed to using the rest of the bag, but I'm now thinking I should have vastly diminished expectations. Split Pea Broth w/SPAM FTW! :) SPAM mainly because vanbrat & I now Need To Know what it will look like. :)...

Shiny heritage! When convenient, a closeup pic would be welcome. :)

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Best... Porn... of... the... Day! :D Do you have a closeup of the spice/etc "hutch" in the 2nd last one (far left, on top of the barrel)? HDR, I posit that your success with split pea soup, vs Qxxx & me, has nothing to do with the peas, and everything to do with equipment & fuel &...

    starting issues 1987 Dodge B250

This week, since I have to be in towns for net access, I'm doing a bunch of Errands, including... my first ever van oil change!!! Am planning to go to the only shop (of 4 emergency repair shops) that fixed the problem (without creating other problems) & treated me respectfully. What's a normal...

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Qxxx: Thanks! :) I used a ratio of 4:1 (water:peas). Granted, the 2nd time I just eyeballed it. Both times, it was more a broth than anything. I suspect your paste was closer to our goal than my broth. ;)

    Campbell’s split pea soup

AAR (After Action Report): Last night was also a bust. :( First mistake: mid-day, when I assembled it, forgot to add veggies! #doh# Also, in retrospect, I should have used the microwave to boil the actual peas! #doh-2# It was "ok", just nowhere near what I was aiming for. I'll have access to...

    showering logistics

Excellent examples, which had not occurred to me - thanks Debbie! Again, I posted my longest duration purely to demonstrate an edge case, and what is possible (it even sorta surprised me, and I'm a Geek). I'm out here working (volunteer), not doing any of the...

    showering logistics

I mostly mentioned the 101 to incentivize you that a week is pretty easy, in comparison. :) As others have said, and you elegantly acknowledge, the logistics of daily showers are "unrealistic" when boondocking. Plus, if you're solo, why bother? :) You're being wise and doing your research well...

Sit, Stay, Good Girl/Boy! 14 days of poop

LOL again!!! :) After my very first van-poop-in-a-bucket, I immediately realized that life would be simpler if I always had a few bags all "ready to go". I'm big on being lazy. :) Plus, to be honest, pooping-in-a-bucket is distressing enough, so every little bit (including pre-assembly &...

Sit, Stay, Good Girl/Boy! 14 days of poop

YES! Where's that "LOL" button?!? :) Very well said! Thanks for the clarifications. I understand much better now. :) For the record, I'm not at all trying to cover my "poo". I use a handful of shavings, and their main job is to absorb liquids. After doing my thing, I gently collapse the bag...

    showering logistics

QFT (Quoted For Truth): Bravo! :) Very well said! You can start retraining yourself now. It'll make your van transition much easier. Start by skipping showers on days when you don't expect human interaction. Once you get comfortable with that, gradually skip 'em on other days, at whatever...

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Thanks for all the helpful info! :) Ok, had schedule slippage, but did remember to tend my thermos (despite forgetting to put it on my ToDo list). The peas had swelled moderately, and I was very glad I had added more water than I originally expected (been there, done that, a lot!). When I...

    Campbell’s split pea soup

New Thought/Question: Maybe I should wait until I'm ready to eat it, before adding the bacon bits? I don't have a fridge, so my bacon bits are at room temperature. I know just barely enough about cooking to know that, in this scenario, it's generally good to "bloom" the spices (i.e. let them...

    Campbell’s split pea soup

LOL! +1 HDR :) Thanks tamewolf! :) With that image floating in my brain, I decided to start another batch, and have just the split peas (rinsed twice) soaking in my thermos. I just have to remember it tomorrow. :) Will have access to a microwave for a bit, so I'll just drain the water, add...

boondocking around NOLA and the Gulf of Mexico

arhly & Qxxx: thanks! That link eventually got me to this excellent region-based WMA finder map (ideal for those of us who don't know where each WMA is): https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/wma/find_a_wma/ Searched a bunch, and the permit is called a "Limited Public Use (LPU) Permit". I...

    Back-door kitchen

Lorelei: Thanks for the genuinely useful and delightfully honest pic! :) My van kitchen is also very much "ad hoc" (after six months of continuous full-timing). I strongly feel that one should start that way, and let the space sort itself out over time. I gather you're still new to your...

    Campbell’s split pea soup

Thanks Sofi! :) Yes, "creamy consistency" is what I'd like. :) The bag didn't mention soaking. HDR was the one who said soaking wasn't necessary. If I soak them overnight, is hot water & thermos going to help much? My goal (and Qxxx too) is to minimize fuel usage. My plan is to: rinse, soak...

Progressive Insurance - what are the "magic words" to get a full-time van quote?

Matlock: Thanks for remembering & asking. :) I'll be tackling that this week. I have to have net access for The Dreaded Anniversary (due to my volunteer work), so will be heading far enough south to have both net & phone. Might even make it far enough for Taco Bell. :) Any more info from...

boondocking around NOLA and the Gulf of Mexico

LOL! I have read reports of boondocking along the Texas part of the Gulf. One factor mentioned was salt air & rust. #ScaryMonsters# That, and the distance, make me inclined to just barely drift into Texas (have always wanted to visit, for the birds).
